A useful starting point for **Spanish sentence structure** is **subject + verb + object**: _Yo necesito agua_ means “I need water.” The subject tells you who, the verb says what they do, and the object completes the idea.

![Spanish sentences on turquoise and yellow word cards](/assets/blog/spanish-sentence-structure-for-beginners/og-image.png)

Spanish also lets you say _Necesito agua_, without _yo_. To make that sentence negative, say _No necesito agua_. To ask someone else, change the verb: _¿Necesitas agua?_ These small changes give you several useful sentences from the same few words.

Start with the five patterns below, then try the eight exercises. If you're already comfortable with simple sentences, [practice building sentences in the present tense](https://espanido.com/rules/presente-de-indicativo/exercise?utm_content=spanish-sentence-structure).

## Five Spanish sentence patterns to start with

| Your goal | Pattern | Example | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Make a statement | Subject + verb + object | _Ana compra pan._ | Ana buys bread. |
| Leave out a clear subject | Verb + object | _Compro pan._ | I buy bread. |
| Make a negative statement | Subject + no + verb + object | _Ana no compra pan._ | Ana doesn't buy bread. |
| Ask a yes or no question | Question marks around a statement pattern | _¿Compras pan?_ | Do you buy bread? |
| Ask for information | Question word + verb + other words as needed | _¿Dónde compras pan?_ | Where do you buy bread? |

These are starting patterns. Spanish word order can change with context and emphasis, and not every sentence needs an object. _Ana duerme_ means “Ana sleeps” and is already complete.

## Build a statement one part at a time

Take the idea “My sister reads a book.” Choose the person, the action and the thing involved:

| Part | Spanish | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Subject | _Mi hermana_ | Identifies the person reading |
| Verb | _lee_ | Expresses the action and agrees with the subject |
| Object | _un libro_ | Tells you what she reads |

Put them together: **Mi hermana lee un libro.**

The verb must match the subject. If you change the person, check the verb too:

- _Yo leo un libro._ (I read a book.)
- _Mi hermana lee un libro._ (My sister reads a book.)
- _Mis hermanas leen un libro._ (My sisters read a book.)

You can then add a place or time: _Mi hermana lee un libro en casa por la noche_ means “My sister reads a book at home at night.” Build the short sentence first so you can check its parts before adding details.

If choosing _leo_, _lee_ or _leen_ is the difficult part, review the [Spanish present tense](https://espanido.com/rules/presente-de-indicativo).

## Leave out the subject when it is clear

English usually needs an explicit subject in statements such as “I study.” Spanish often uses the verb ending and context instead:

- _Estudio español._ (I study Spanish.)
- _Estudiamos español._ (We study Spanish.)

Both are complete sentences. You can still include _yo_ or _nosotros_ when you want to make the subject explicit, especially to contrast people: _Yo estudio español y ella estudia francés_ means “I study Spanish and she studies French.” The RAE explains this use of [subject pronouns for contrast or clarification](https://www.rae.es/dpd/pronombres%20personales%20t%C3%B3nicos).

Context matters. _Estudia español_ could describe he, she or formal “you.” If the listener doesn't know who you mean, say _Ana estudia español_ or name the person another way.

## Put no before the verb

For these simple negative statements, put **no before the conjugated verb**. If you include the subject, it normally comes before _no_:

| Statement | Negative statement |
| --- | --- |
| _Quiero café._ (I want coffee.) | _No quiero café._ (I don't want coffee.) |
| _Luis trabaja hoy._ (Luis works today.) | _Luis no trabaja hoy._ (Luis doesn't work today.) |
| _Tenemos tiempo._ (We have time.) | _No tenemos tiempo._ (We don't have time.) |

You don't need to translate the English auxiliary “do” or “does.” In _No quiero café_, _quiero_ is already the correct form for “I want.”

When you later add an object pronoun, it fits between _no_ and the verb: _No lo quiero_ means “I don't want it.” There's a short explanation of that pattern below.

## Ask a yes or no question

A statement and a yes or no question can use the same word order:

- _Tienes tiempo._ (You have time.)
- _¿Tienes tiempo?_ (Do you have time?)

In speech, intonation helps identify the question. In writing, use both **¿** and **?**. Spanish doesn't add an equivalent of the English auxiliary “do” to form this question. See the RAE's explanation of [Spanish question marks](https://www.rae.es/dpd/interrogaci%C3%B3n).

Keep the person consistent. _¿Tengo tiempo?_ asks “Do I have time?” To ask an informal singular “you,” use _¿Tienes tiempo?_

You can also name the subject: _¿Tiene Ana tiempo?_ means “Does Ana have time?” Subject position can vary, so moving the subject is not a rule you must apply to every Spanish question.

## Use a question word to ask for information

Add a question word when you need more than “yes” or “no”:

| Question | Meaning | A possible answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| _¿Qué necesitas?_ | What do you need? | _Necesito ayuda._ (I need help.) |
| _¿Dónde vives?_ | Where do you live? | _Vivo en Madrid._ (I live in Madrid.) |
| _¿Cuándo trabajas?_ | When do you work? | _Trabajo mañana._ (I work tomorrow.) |
| _¿Cómo estudias español?_ | How do you study Spanish? | _Estudio con ejemplos._ (I study with examples.) |

These question words take written accents. In _¿Qué necesitas?_, _qué_ already asks about the thing you need, so you don't need to add another object.

For more examples, read the [guide to qué, cuál and cómo](https://espanido.com/blog/spanish-questions-que-cual-como), then try [Spanish question exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/preguntas/exercise?utm_content=spanish-sentence-structure).

## Two word order details to watch

### Keep a noun and its description together

Many descriptive adjectives follow the noun: _un libro interesante_ means “an interesting book.” You can use that whole group in a sentence: _Leo un libro interesante_ means “I read an interesting book.”

This isn't an absolute rule. Some adjectives come before the noun, and position can affect meaning. The [Spanish adjective guide](https://espanido.com/blog/spanish-adjectives-fix-five-common-mistakes) explains those cases. For your first sentences, use a noun phrase you've checked rather than translating English word order automatically.

### Small object pronouns have their own position

Replacing a noun with a short object pronoun changes the pattern:

- _Leo el libro._ (I read the book.)
- _Lo leo._ (I read it.)
- _No lo leo._ (I don't read it.)

Here, _lo_ replaces _el libro_ and goes before the conjugated verb. With an infinitive, it can attach to the end: _Quiero leerlo_ means “I want to read it.” _Lo quiero leer_ is also possible. These follow the RAE's [rules for object pronoun placement](https://www.rae.es/dpd/pronombres%20personales%20%C3%A1tonos).

## Practice building eight Spanish sentences

Write your answers before checking the solutions. For questions 1–3, use every word once and start with the named word. Add capitalization and punctuation.

1. Start with **Marta**: _pan / compra / Marta_. Meaning: Marta buys bread.
2. Start with **No**: _tiempo / no / tengo_. Meaning: I don't have time.
3. Start with **Mi**: _español / hermana / estudia / mi_. Meaning: My sister studies Spanish.
4. Remove the subject pronoun from _Yo necesito ayuda_ without changing the meaning.
5. Make _Tenemos café_ negative.
6. Turn _Quieres agua_ into a written yes or no question.
7. Ask “Where do you live?” using informal singular “you.”
8. Replace _el libro_ with _lo_ in _Leo el libro_.

### Answers and explanations

1. **Marta compra pan.** (Marta buys bread.) The subject comes first, followed by the verb and object.
2. **No tengo tiempo.** (I don't have time.) _No_ comes before _tengo_.
3. **Mi hermana estudia español.** (My sister studies Spanish.) Keep _mi hermana_ together as the subject.
4. **Necesito ayuda.** (I need help.) _Necesito_ still identifies the subject as “I.”
5. **No tenemos café.** (We don't have coffee.) Add _no_ before the verb.
6. **¿Quieres agua?** (Do you want water?) Keep _quieres_ and add both question marks.
7. **¿Dónde vives?** (Where do you live?) Use _dónde_ with an accent and the _tú_ form _vives_. _¿Dónde vives tú?_ is also possible.
8. **Lo leo.** (I read it.) The object pronoun goes before _leo_.

Now write three sentences about your own day. Make one negative and turn another into a question. When you're ready for more prompts, [practice present tense sentences on Espanido](https://espanido.com/rules/presente-de-indicativo/exercise?utm_content=spanish-sentence-structure).

## Common questions about Spanish sentence structure

### Does Spanish always use subject verb object order

No. It's a useful starting point for statements with an object, but subjects can be omitted, some verbs don't take an object, and word order can change with context. Time phrases can also move: _Hoy trabajo_ and _Trabajo hoy_ both mean “I work today.”

### Can a Spanish sentence be just one word

Yes. _Trabajo_ can mean “I work,” and _Estudio_ can mean “I study.” The verb ending supplies information about the subject. Context tells the listener what you mean.

### What should I check when my sentence sounds wrong

Find the verb first and check that it matches the subject. Then check the position of _no_, any object pronoun, and the words that belong together, such as _mi hermana_ or _un libro interesante_. Check a question for both question marks and any needed written accents.

Spanish sentence structure for your first sentences

Both **por** and **para** can mean “for,” but they don't express the same idea. To choose between them, ask whether you're describing a reason or route with **por**, or a goal or destination with **para**.

Want to practice right away? [Start the preposiciones basicas exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/preposiciones-basicas/exercise?utm_content=por-vs-para-in-spanish).

![Por vs para in Spanish shown with a route and a destination target](/assets/blog/por-vs-para-in-spanish-differences-examples-practice/og-image.png)

## Por vs para at a glance

Start with this contrast:

- Use **por** to look back at a **reason**, or to describe a **route, method, exchange, or duration**.
- Use **para** to look forward to a **purpose, recipient, destination, or deadline**.

Compare these two sentences:

- **Lo hice por ti.**: I did it because of you, or on your behalf.
- **Lo hice para ti.**: I made it for you to receive or use.

The English translation may use “for” in both cases, but Spanish distinguishes the relationships with either **por** or **para**.

| Use | Por | Para |
|---|---|---|
| Main idea | Reason, route, method | Goal, destination, result |
| Simple question | Why? How? Through where? | What for? For whom? Toward where? |
| Example | **Viajamos por España.**: We travel around Spain. | **Salimos para España.**: We leave for Spain. |
| Time | Duration or approximate time | Deadline or specific future point |
| People | Motive or acting on someone’s behalf | Recipient |

These ideas cover many everyday situations. You can also review them in Espanido’s [basic Spanish prepositions guide](https://espanido.com/rules/preposiciones-basicas).

## When to use por

Think of **por** as pointing to what is behind, around, or involved in an action. It often explains a cause, path, method, or exchange.

### Use por for a reason or cause

Choose **por** when you can ask, “Why did this happen?”

- **Cancelaron el partido por la lluvia.**: They canceled the game because of the rain.
- **Gracias por tu ayuda.**: Thank you for your help.
- **No salí por el frío.**: I didn't go out because of the cold.

This use looks back at the reason. The rain caused the cancellation, and the cold explains why the speaker stayed inside.

An infinitive can also follow **por** to explain the reason for a reaction or consequence:

- **Lo felicitaron por ganar.**: They congratulated him for winning.
- **Me multaron por aparcar aquí.**: They fined me for parking here.

### Use por for movement through or around a place

Choose **por** when someone or something moves through, along, around, or by a place.

- **Caminamos por el parque.**: We walked through the park.
- **El tren pasa por Madrid.**: The train passes through Madrid.
- **Paseamos por la ciudad.**: We walked around the city.

Here, the place is part of the route, not necessarily the final destination.

### Use por for a method or means

**Por** can tell you how something is sent, done, or communicated.

- **Te llamo por teléfono.**: I’ll call you by phone.
- **Envié el documento por correo electrónico.**: I sent the document by email.
- **Viajamos por tren.**: We travel by train.

In everyday Spanish, you'll also hear **en tren** for “by train.” **Por** is common with communication methods such as **por teléfono**, **por correo**, and **por internet**.

### Use por for exchange, price, or rate

When one thing is given in exchange for another, use **por**. It also appears with prices and rates.

- **Pagué veinte euros por el libro.**: I paid twenty euros for the book.
- **Cambio mi postre por tu café.**: I’ll trade my dessert for your coffee.
- **Trabajo por diez euros la hora.**: I work for ten euros per hour.
- **Dos veces por semana.**: Twice per week.

The word “per” often becomes **por** in Spanish.

### Use por for duration

To say how long an action continues, especially when emphasizing the length of time, use **por**.

- **Estudié por tres horas.**: I studied for three hours.
- **Vivieron allí por un año.**: They lived there for a year.
- **Nos quedamos por unos días.**: We stayed for a few days.

In many regions, speakers may leave out **por** and say **Estudié tres horas**. Both forms can be understood, but **por** makes the duration explicit.

### Use por for an agent or acting on behalf of someone

In a passive sentence, **por** introduces the person or thing that performs the action.

- **La novela fue escrita por Isabel Allende.**: The novel was written by Isabel Allende.
- **La cena fue preparada por Ana.**: Dinner was prepared by Ana.

The preposition can also mean “on behalf of” or “in place of”:

- **Hoy trabajo por Marta.**: Today I am working for Marta, in her place.
- **Hablaré por el grupo.**: I will speak on behalf of the group.

### Common expressions with por

Some uses are best learned as short phrases:

- **por favor**: please
- **por ejemplo**: for example
- **por eso**: therefore; that is why
- **por supuesto**: of course
- **por la mañana**: in the morning
- **por fin**: finally
- **por aquí**: around here; this way

Learning whole phrases means you won't need to translate every word separately.

## When to use para

Think of **para** as an arrow pointing forward. It often leads toward a purpose, person, place, deadline, or expected result.

### Use para for a purpose

Place **para** before an infinitive to say what an action is meant to achieve.

- **Estudio para aprender español.**: I study in order to learn Spanish.
- **Ahorro dinero para viajar.**: I save money to travel.
- **Uso esta aplicación para practicar.**: I use this app to practice.

Ask, “What is this action for?” An answer that states a purpose usually takes **para**.

Now compare reason and purpose:

- **Estudio español por mi trabajo.**: I study Spanish because of my job.
- **Estudio español para trabajar en México.**: I study Spanish in order to work in Mexico.

The job is the reason in the first sentence. Working in Mexico is the goal in the second.

### Use para for a recipient

Choose **para** when a person will receive something.

- **Este regalo es para Lucía.**: This gift is for Lucía.
- **Tengo una pregunta para ti.**: I have a question for you.
- **Compramos comida para los niños.**: We bought food for the children.

The person after **para** is the intended receiver, audience, or user.

### Use para for a destination

When you're moving toward a final destination, use **para**.

- **Salimos para Barcelona mañana.**: We leave for Barcelona tomorrow.
- **Este autobús va para el centro.**: This bus goes toward downtown.
- **El paquete es para Chile.**: The package is for Chile.

The contrast becomes clear when **por** and **para** appear with the same place:

- **Conducimos por Sevilla.**: We drive through or around Seville.
- **Conducimos para Sevilla.**: We are driving toward Seville.

### Use para for a deadline

A deadline takes **para** because something must be ready by a target time.

- **La tarea es para el lunes.**: The homework is due Monday.
- **Necesito el informe para mañana.**: I need the report by tomorrow.
- **Todo estará listo para las seis.**: Everything will be ready by six.

The time after **para** is a target point. Don't confuse it with duration, which often uses **por**:

- **Trabajé por dos horas.**: I worked for two hours.
- **El trabajo es para las dos.**: The work is due by two.

### Use para for opinions and comparisons

**Para** can introduce someone’s point of view.

- **Para mí, esta canción es preciosa.**: For me, this song is beautiful.
- **Para Carlos, el examen fue fácil.**: In Carlos’s opinion, the exam was easy.

It can also show that something differs from what you might expect:

- **Habla muy bien para ser principiante.**: She speaks very well for a beginner.
- **Hace frío para ser agosto.**: It is cold for August.

### Use para for work or intended use

Use **para** to name an employer, audience, or intended function.

- **Trabajo para una empresa española.**: I work for a Spanish company.
- **Escribo para una revista.**: I write for a magazine.
- **Esta mesa es para estudiar.**: This table is for studying.

Compare **Trabajo para Marta** with **Trabajo por Marta**. The first normally means Marta is your boss or the person benefiting from your work. The second can mean you're replacing Marta or acting on her behalf.

## How to remember por and para

One useful memory aid is **path versus purpose**:

- **Por = path and past reason.** Think about the route, cause, method, or exchange involved in an action.
- **Para = purpose and point ahead.** Think about the goal, recipient, destination, or deadline.

Imagine a traveler taking a gift to a friend:

- She walks **por el parque**: through the park.
- She travels **para Madrid**: toward Madrid.
- She bought the gift **por veinte euros**: for twenty euros.
- The gift is **para su amiga**: for her friend.
- She needs it **para el viernes**: by Friday.

Together, these sentences connect several uses of the two prepositions.

## Common por vs para mistakes

### Mistake 1: translating “for” directly

English “for” doesn't always tell you which Spanish word to use.

- Incorrect: **Gracias para tu ayuda.**
- Correct: **Gracias por tu ayuda.**: Thank you for your help.

The help is the reason for the thanks, so **por** is the right choice.

### Mistake 2: using por for every length of time or deadline

A duration and a deadline express different ideas.

- **Estudié por dos días.**: I studied for two days.
- **El proyecto es para el martes.**: The project is due Tuesday.

Ask whether you mean “for how long?” or “by when?”

### Mistake 3: confusing route and destination

Use **por** for the place you pass through and **para** for where you're going.

- **Pasamos por Valencia.**: We pass through Valencia.
- **Salimos para Valencia.**: We leave for Valencia.

### Mistake 4: treating purpose and reason as the same thing

A reason explains why an action started, while a purpose describes the intended result.

- **Vine por la reunión.**: I came because of the meeting.
- **Vine para hablar contigo.**: I came to talk with you.

## Quick por vs para practice

## Frequently asked questions

### Can por and para both mean “for”?

Yes. **Por** often gives a reason, exchange, route, method, or duration, while **para** usually gives a purpose, recipient, destination, or deadline. The relationship expressed by the sentence matters more than the English translation.

### Is para always followed by an infinitive?

No. **Para** can be followed by an infinitive for a purpose, as in **Estudio para aprender**. It can also be followed by a person, place, thing, or time: **para Ana**, **para Madrid**, **para el proyecto**, or **para mañana**.

### What is the difference between por ti and para ti?

**Por ti** means “because of you,” “for your sake,” or “on your behalf.” **Para ti** means that you're the recipient or intended user.

- **Lo hice por ti.**: I did it because of you or for your sake.
- **Lo compré para ti.**: I bought it for you to receive.

### Should I memorize every por and para rule?

You don't need to memorize everything at once. Start with the main contrast: **por** for reason or route, and **para** for purpose or destination. Add common phrases and less frequent uses as you encounter them.

### How should I practice por and para?

Practice with complete sentences instead of isolated words. Identify the relationship the speaker wants to express, such as reason, route, method, purpose, recipient, destination, or deadline. With repeated practice, the choice can become easier.

Por vs para in Spanish: differences, examples & practice

Spanish adjectives change according to the nouns they describe. If you've said *una coche rojo* or *un bueno amigo*, this guide explains what went wrong and how to correct it.

Want to practice right away? [Start the adjetivos exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/adjetivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-adjectives-five-mistakes).

![Spanish adjective forms alto, alta, altos and altas matched with people](/assets/blog/spanish-adjectives-fix-five-common-mistakes/og-image.png)

## The basic rule for Spanish adjectives

An adjective describes a person, place, thing, or idea. Words such as *bonito* (pretty), *grande* (big), and *interesante* (interesting) are adjectives.

In Spanish, an adjective often changes to match the noun it describes. You also need to consider where the adjective goes and whether the sentence uses *ser* or *estar*.

Here is a simple example:

- *un coche rojo*: a red car
- *una casa roja*: a red house
- *dos coches rojos*: two red cars
- *dos casas rojas*: two red houses

The meaning of *rojo* stays the same, but its ending changes. This matching is called agreement: the noun and adjective agree in gender and number.

You can review these patterns in Espanido’s [Spanish adjective guide](https://espanido.com/rules/adjetivos) before working through the five mistakes below.

## Mistake 1: Not matching gender

A common mistake is using the masculine form of an adjective with every noun.

Incorrect:

- *una casa bonito*

Correct:

- *una casa bonita*: a pretty house

The noun *casa* is feminine, so *bonito* changes to *bonita*. With a masculine noun, you use *bonito*: *un pueblo bonito* means “a pretty town.”

Many adjectives ending in *-o* follow this pattern:

| Masculine | Feminine | English |
|---|---|---|
| *alto* | *alta* | tall |
| *pequeño* | *pequeña* | small |
| *rojo* | *roja* | red |
| *cansado* | *cansada* | tired |

However, not every adjective changes for gender. Adjectives ending in *-e* and many adjectives ending in consonants keep one form.

- *un libro interesante*: an interesting book
- *una película interesante*: an interesting movie
- *un examen difícil*: a difficult exam
- *una pregunta difícil*: a difficult question

Don't choose the adjective’s gender based on the person speaking. Match it with the noun being described.

For example, a woman can say *Tengo un coche nuevo* (“I have a new car”). The adjective is masculine because *coche* is masculine, not because of who owns it.

### Watch out for nationality adjectives

Many nationality adjectives change even when the masculine form ends in a consonant:

- *un escritor español*: a Spanish writer
- *una escritora española*: a Spanish writer
- *un estudiante francés*: a French student
- *una estudiante francesa*: a French student

Learn a new noun with its article, such as *la casa* or *el coche*. Knowing the noun’s gender will help you choose the correct adjective form.

## Mistake 2: Forgetting plural agreement

English adjectives don't become plural. We say “a red car” and “two red cars,” but the word “red” doesn't change.

Spanish adjectives usually do change:

Incorrect:

- *dos coches rojo*
- *unas casas moderna*

Correct:

- *dos coches rojos*: two red cars
- *unas casas modernas*: some modern houses

If an adjective ends in a vowel, you normally add *-s*:

- *bonito → bonitos*
- *grande → grandes*
- *verde → verdes*

If it ends in a consonant, you normally add *-es*:

- *fácil → fáciles*
- *popular → populares*
- *azul → azules*

Both gender and number may change at the same time:

| Noun phrase | Adjective form |
|---|---|
| *el gato blanco* | masculine singular |
| *la gata blanca* | feminine singular |
| *los gatos blancos* | masculine plural |
| *las gatas blancas* | feminine plural |

When one adjective describes a mixed group, Spanish normally uses the masculine plural form:

- *Ana y Pablo están cansados.*: Ana and Pablo are tired.
- *La camisa y el pantalón son nuevos.*: The shirt and the trousers are new.

Check each phrase in three steps: find the noun, identify its gender, and determine whether it's singular or plural.

## Mistake 3: Putting every adjective before the noun

English usually places adjectives before nouns, as in “a small apartment” or “an interesting book.” In Spanish, descriptive adjectives often go after the noun.

Incorrect or unnatural in a basic description:

- *un rojo coche*

Natural:

- *un coche rojo*: a red car

Here are more examples:

- *una mesa redonda*: a round table
- *un problema difícil*: a difficult problem
- *una ciudad tranquila*: a peaceful city
- *unos zapatos negros*: some black shoes

Placing descriptive adjectives after the noun is a useful default. Colors, shapes, nationalities, and physical descriptions usually follow the noun.

Some adjectives can appear before it, especially when the speaker is adding an opinion or emphasis:

- *una hermosa ciudad*: a beautiful city
- *una ciudad hermosa*: a beautiful city

Both are possible, but the first can sound more expressive. The second is a direct description.

### Position can change the meaning

Some Spanish adjectives have a different meaning depending on their position.

| Before the noun | After the noun |
|---|---|
| *un viejo amigo*: a longtime friend | *un amigo viejo*: an old friend |
| *un gran hombre*: a great man | *un hombre grande*: a big man |
| *una pobre mujer*: an unfortunate woman | *una mujer pobre*: a poor woman |
| *cierta noticia*: a certain piece of news | *una noticia cierta*: a true piece of news |

Start with the usual noun-plus-adjective order. You can then learn common changes in meaning as complete phrases.

## Mistake 4: Saying bueno or grande in the wrong form

Some Spanish adjectives become shorter when they appear before certain nouns. This is called shortening, or *apócope* in Spanish.

A common example is *bueno*. Before a masculine singular noun, it becomes *buen*:

Incorrect:

- *un bueno amigo*

Correct:

- *un buen amigo*: a good friend

After the noun, it keeps its full form:

- *un amigo bueno*: a good or kind friend

Other adjectives have shortened forms too:

| Full form | Short form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| *bueno* | *buen* | *un buen día*: a good day |
| *malo* | *mal* | *un mal resultado*: a bad result |
| *primero* | *primer* | *el primer día*: the first day |
| *tercero* | *tercer* | *el tercer piso*: the third floor |
| *alguno* | *algún* | *algún problema*: some problem |
| *ninguno* | *ningún* | *ningún mensaje*: no message |

These forms are shortened before a masculine singular noun. Compare:

- *un buen restaurante*: a good restaurant
- *una buena cafetería*: a good café
- *el primer capítulo*: the first chapter
- *la primera página*: the first page

*Grande* works a little differently. It becomes *gran* before a singular noun of either gender when it means “great” or “important.”

- *un gran escritor*: a great writer
- *una gran oportunidad*: a great opportunity
- *una casa grande*: a big house

Here, position affects the meaning. *Gran* often means “great,” while *grande* after the noun usually refers to size.

## Mistake 5: Mixing up ser and estar with adjectives

Choosing the correct adjective form is only part of the sentence. You may also need to choose between *ser* and *estar*, which both mean “to be.”

Use *ser* to identify or describe a general characteristic. Use *estar* for a state, condition, or how someone or something is at a particular time.

- *Diego es aburrido.*: Diego is boring.
- *Diego está aburrido.*: Diego is bored.

The adjective is the same, but the message changes. The first sentence describes Diego as a boring person, while the second tells us how he feels now.

Compare these pairs:

- *La sopa es buena.*: The soup is good.
- *La sopa está buena.*: The soup tastes good.
- *Clara es lista.*: Clara is clever.
- *Clara está lista.*: Clara is ready.
- *El niño es tranquilo.*: The child is calm by nature.
- *El niño está tranquilo.*: The child is calm right now.

Don't rely only on the idea that *ser* is permanent and *estar* is temporary. That shortcut doesn't explain every sentence.

Instead, ask whether you're describing what someone or something is like or its current state. You can study more examples with Espanido’s [ser and estar practice exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/verbo-ser-y-estar/exercise?utm_content=spanish-adjectives-five-mistakes).

## A checklist for Spanish adjectives

Before finishing a sentence, use this checklist:

1. **Find the noun.** What person or thing does the adjective describe?
2. **Check gender.** Is the noun masculine or feminine?
3. **Check number.** Is it singular or plural?
4. **Check position.** Does the adjective normally go after the noun?
5. **Check the verb.** If you use “to be,” do you need *ser* or *estar*?

Imagine you want to say “The girls are tired.” Start with the noun: *las chicas*.

It's feminine and plural, so *cansado* becomes *cansadas*. Their tiredness is a current state, making the full sentence *Las chicas están cansadas*.

Now consider “They are hardworking girls.” The noun is still feminine and plural, but this is a general characteristic: *Son chicas trabajadoras*.

## Mini practice: fix the mistakes

Correct these five sentences before checking the answers:

1. *Tengo una perro pequeño.*
2. *Las flores son bonito.*
3. *Compramos un nuevo coche rojo* when you simply mean “We bought a new red car.”
4. *Es un bueno profesor.*
5. *Marta es cansada hoy.*

### Answers

1. *Tengo un perro pequeño.*: I have a small dog.
2. *Las flores son bonitas.*: The flowers are pretty.
3. *Compramos un coche nuevo y rojo.*: We bought a new red car.
4. *Es un buen profesor.*: He is a good teacher.
5. *Marta está cansada hoy.*: Marta is tired today.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do Spanish adjectives always go after the noun?

No. Descriptive adjectives often go after the noun, but some can go before it for emphasis, style, or a different meaning. The noun-plus-adjective order is a useful starting point.

### Do all Spanish adjectives have masculine and feminine forms?

No. Adjectives ending in *-o* often change to *-a*, but adjectives such as *interesante*, *verde*, and *difícil* use the same form for masculine and feminine nouns. They still change for the plural: *interesantes*, *verdes*, and *difíciles*.

### What happens when an adjective describes two nouns?

Use a plural adjective. If the nouns include both masculine and feminine forms, traditional standard Spanish normally uses the masculine plural: *el libro y la revista nuevos* (“the new book and magazine”).

### Is adjective agreement important in conversation?

Yes, although a small agreement mistake won't usually prevent understanding. Focus on clear communication and practice the same patterns in different sentences.

## Keep the four matches in mind

Spanish adjective use depends mainly on matching the adjective with the noun’s gender and number, placing it in a suitable position, and choosing *ser* or *estar* based on the meaning.

Start with phrases such as *una casa bonita*, *unos libros interesantes*, and *estoy cansado* or *estoy cansada*. Then apply the same patterns to other nouns and adjectives.

Spanish adjectives: fix these five common mistakes

The Spanish verb _ir_ means _to go_. Its forms can look very different: _voy_ means I go or I am going, _fui_ means I went, _iba_ means I was going or used to go, and _iré_ means I will go. Each form refers to a different point or period on a timeline.

Want to practice right away? [Start the conjugation ir exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-ir/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire).

![Spanish ir conjugation timeline showing voy, fui, iba and iré](/assets/blog/spanish-ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire/og-image.png)

## The quick difference between voy, fui, iba and iré

If a friend asks about your trips to Madrid, you could answer with four different forms of _ir_:

- _Voy a Madrid hoy._: I am going to Madrid today.
- _Fui a Madrid ayer._: I went to Madrid yesterday.
- _Iba a Madrid cada verano._: I used to go to Madrid every summer.
- _Iré a Madrid el próximo año._: I will go to Madrid next year.

Here’s the difference at a glance:

| Form | Tense | Basic meaning | Typical use |
| ----- | --------- | ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| _voy_ | Present | I go, I am going | Now, routines and near-future plans |
| _fui_ | Preterite | I went | A completed past trip or event |
| _iba_ | Imperfect | I was going, I used to go | Past habits, background and interrupted actions |
| _iré_ | Future | I will go | Future plans, predictions and promises |

All four words are first-person singular forms, so they’re used with _yo_. Spanish often leaves out _yo_ because the verb form already shows who is going.

## Voy: I go or I am going

_Voy_ is the present-tense form of _ir_ for _yo_. Use it for something happening now, a regular activity or a planned trip.

- _Voy al supermercado._: I am going to the supermarket.
- _Voy al gimnasio los lunes._: I go to the gym on Mondays.
- _Hoy voy en autobús._: Today I am going by bus.

A common pattern is **ir a + infinitive**. An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, such as _comer_, _estudiar_ or _viajar_. This pattern expresses a plan or something that will happen soon.

- _Voy a estudiar esta noche._: I am going to study tonight.
- _Voy a llamar a Ana._: I am going to call Ana.
- _Voy a viajar en junio._: I am going to travel in June.

Notice the two uses of _a_. When you go to a place, use _ir a + place_: _Voy a la biblioteca._ When you plan an action, use _ir a + infinitive_: _Voy a leer._

You can review every present form on Espanido’s [ir conjugation page](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-ir). Then test yourself with the [interactive ir conjugation exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-ir/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire).

## Fui: I went

_Fui_ is the preterite form for _yo_. The preterite presents a past action as finished, and it’s common with time words such as _ayer_, _anoche_ and _el sábado pasado_.

- _Fui al médico ayer._: I went to the doctor yesterday.
- _El sábado fui a una fiesta._: On Saturday I went to a party.
- _Fui a México en 2022._: I went to Mexico in 2022.

Think of _fui_ as a completed point on a timeline. The trip began and ended in the past.

_Fui_ is also a form of _ser_, meaning _to be_. Context usually makes the meaning clear:

- _Fui al banco._: I went to the bank. Here, _fui_ comes from _ir_.
- _Fui el capitán del equipo._: I was the team captain. Here, _fui_ comes from _ser_.

A place introduced by _a_ often signals movement, but you should always read the whole sentence. For more practice with completed actions, try the [Spanish preterite exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire).

## Iba: I was going or used to go

_Iba_ is the imperfect form for _yo_. The imperfect describes an action that was in progress, happened regularly or formed the background of a past story.

- _Iba al trabajo cuando empezó a llover._: I was going to work when it started to rain.
- _De niño, iba al parque todos los días._: As a child, I used to go to the park every day.
- _Antes iba en tren._: I used to go by train before.

Unlike _fui_, _iba_ doesn’t focus on the end of the trip. It shows the action in progress or as part of a repeated routine.

Compare these two examples:

- _Fui a la playa el domingo._: I went to the beach on Sunday.
- _Iba a la playa todos los domingos._: I used to go to the beach every Sunday.

The first sentence describes one completed visit. The second describes a past habit.

The phrase **iba a + infinitive** can also describe a plan that existed in the past. Sometimes the plan happened, and sometimes it didn’t.

- _Iba a cocinar, pero pedimos una pizza._: I was going to cook, but we ordered a pizza.
- _Iba a llamarte._: I was going to call you.

Words such as _siempre_, _a menudo_, _cada verano_ and _cuando era niño_ often appear with the imperfect. They’re useful clues, but the meaning of the full sentence matters more than any single word.

For more practice distinguishing _fui_ and _iba_, use Espanido’s [past-tense comparison exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/tres-tiempos-pasados/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire).

## Iré: I will go

_Iré_ is the simple future form for _yo_. Use it to talk about a future trip, prediction, decision or promise.

- _Iré a España el próximo verano._: I will go to Spain next summer.
- _No te preocupes; iré contigo._: Don’t worry; I will go with you.
- _Algún día iré a Buenos Aires._: One day I will go to Buenos Aires.

The written accent matters. _Iré_ has an accent on the final _é_. Without it, the word is misspelled.

Spanish speakers often use _voy a ir_ instead of _iré_, especially for a clear or near-future plan:

- _Voy a ir al cine esta noche._: I am going to go to the cinema tonight.
- _Iré al cine algún día._: I will go to the cinema someday.

The first example presents an existing plan. The second is a future statement, decision or less immediate idea. Both forms can sometimes describe the same event.

For focused work on future forms, try the [simple future exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/futuro-simple/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire).

## Ir conjugation by tense

Here are the complete forms for the four tenses. The pronoun _vosotros_ is mainly used in Spain. In most of Latin America, speakers use _ustedes_ for plural _you_.

| Pronoun | Present | Preterite | Imperfect | Future |
| --------------------- | ------- | --------- | --------- | ------ |
| yo | voy | fui | iba | iré |
| tú | vas | fuiste | ibas | irás |
| él, ella, usted | va | fue | iba | irá |
| nosotros/as | vamos | fuimos | íbamos | iremos |
| vosotros/as | vais | fuisteis | ibais | iréis |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | van | fueron | iban | irán |

The present and preterite forms are irregular, so they don’t follow the usual patterns. The imperfect forms begin with _iba-_, while the future keeps the full infinitive _ir_ and adds future endings.

Start with groups such as _voy, vas, va_ and _fui, fuiste, fue_. Put each form into a short sentence before studying the rest of the table.

## A mini story with all four forms

Read this short story and notice how the timeline changes:

_Ahora voy al trabajo en bicicleta. Antes iba en autobús todos los días. Ayer fui en taxi porque llovía. Mañana iré otra vez en bicicleta._

Now I go to work by bicycle. Before, I used to go by bus every day. Yesterday I went by taxi because it was raining. Tomorrow I will go by bicycle again.

The time expressions indicate the tense:

- _Ahora_ points to _voy_.
- _Antes_ and _todos los días_ show the past habit _iba_.
- _Ayer_ marks the completed action _fui_.
- _Mañana_ points to the future form _iré_.

For practice, write four connected sentences about one place. Change only the time and the form of _ir_.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Using fui for a repeated past habit

Incorrect: _Cuando era niño, fui al parque todos los días._

Better: _Cuando era niño, iba al parque todos los días._: When I was a child, I used to go to the park every day.

Use _iba_ because this was a repeated background habit. Save _fui_ for one finished visit: _Ayer fui al parque._

### Forgetting a after ir

Incorrect: _Voy la escuela._

Correct: _Voy a la escuela._: I go to school.

The verb _ir_ normally uses _a_ before a destination. When _a_ meets the masculine article _el_, they combine as _al_: _Voy al mercado._

### Mixing voy and iré in the same construction

Incorrect: _Voy a iré mañana._

Correct: _Voy a ir mañana._: I am going to go tomorrow.

Also correct: _Iré mañana._: I will go tomorrow.

After _voy a_, use the infinitive _ir_, not the future form _iré_.

### Dropping written accents

The accents in _iré_, _irá_, _iréis_ and _irán_ are part of the spelling. The _nosotros_ imperfect form also needs an accent: _íbamos_.

## Quick practice

Choose _voy_, _fui_, _iba_ or _iré_ for each sentence.

1. Ayer \_\_\_ al centro con Marta.
2. Cuando vivía en Lima, \_\_\_ al mercado cada sábado.
3. Ahora \_\_\_ a clase.
4. El próximo año \_\_\_ a Colombia.
5. \_\_\_ a cocinar, pero no había comida.
6. Esta noche \_\_\_ a estudiar.

Answers:

1. _fui_: The trip happened and finished yesterday.
2. _iba_: This was a repeated past habit.
3. _voy_: The action is happening now.
4. _iré_: The trip is in the future.
5. _iba_: _Iba a cocinar_ describes a past plan.
6. _voy_: _Voy a estudiar_ expresses a near-future plan.

After checking your answers, repeat the [Espanido ir exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-ir/exercise?utm_content=ir-conjugation-voy-fui-iba-ire) for more practice.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between fui and iba?

_Fui_ describes a completed past trip: _Fui a Sevilla ayer._ _Iba_ describes a past habit or an action in progress: _Iba a Sevilla cada verano._

### Is voy past, present or future?

_Voy_ is a present-tense form. However, _voy a + infinitive_ often talks about the near future: _Voy a viajar mañana._

### Why does fui mean both went and was?

The verbs _ir_ and _ser_ share the same preterite forms. Context tells you which verb is being used: _Fui a casa_ means I went home, while _Fui profesor_ means I was a teacher.

### Can I use voy a ir instead of iré?

Often, yes. _Voy a ir_ commonly expresses a plan, while _iré_ can express a prediction, promise or future decision. The choice depends on what you want to emphasize.

### How can I remember these forms?

Connect each form with a time clue: _hoy voy_, _ayer fui_, _antes iba_ and _mañana iré_. Then create personal examples about places you visit.

Spanish ir conjugation: voy, fui, iba and iré

The Spanish conditional perfect lets you talk about what would have happened under different conditions. The formula is a conditional form of *haber* plus a past participle, as in *habría hablado*: “I would have spoken.”

![Spanish conditional perfect formula with habría and a past participle](/assets/blog/how-to-form-the-spanish-conditional-perfect/og-image.png)

## The conditional perfect in one sentence

Use the Spanish conditional perfect to describe an action that would have happened but didn't, or to make a guess about something in the past.

Here are two examples:

- *Habría ido, pero estaba enfermo.*: “I would have gone, but I was sick.”
- *¿Por qué no llegó Ana? Habría perdido el tren.*: “Why didn’t Ana arrive? She probably missed the train.”

The first sentence imagines a different past. The second makes a guess about a past event.

In Spanish, this tense is called the *condicional compuesto*. You may also see it called the conditional perfect tense.

## The basic formula

To form the Spanish conditional perfect, use:

**conditional form of *haber* + past participle**

For example:

- *Yo habría hablado.*: “I would have spoken.”
- *Tú habrías comido.*: “You would have eaten.”
- *Ellos habrían salido.*: “They would have left.”

Only *haber* changes to match the subject. The past participle stays the same.

| Subject | Conditional form of *haber* | Example with *viajar* |
|---|---|---|
| yo | habría | *habría viajado* |
| tú | habrías | *habrías viajado* |
| él, ella, usted | habría | *habría viajado* |
| nosotros, nosotras | habríamos | *habríamos viajado* |
| vosotros, vosotras | habríais | *habríais viajado* |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | habrían | *habrían viajado* |

Notice the accent in every form: *habría, habrías, habríamos, habríais,* and *habrían*. These accents show where the stress falls.

## How to make the past participle

The past participle is the verb form used after *haber*. English examples include “spoken,” “eaten,” and “lived.”

For regular Spanish verbs, remove the infinitive ending and add the participle ending:

| Infinitive ending | Add | Example |
|---|---|---|
| *-ar* | *-ado* | *hablar → hablado* |
| *-er* | *-ido* | *comer → comido* |
| *-ir* | *-ido* | *vivir → vivido* |

Next, place the participle after the correct form of *haber*:

- *Habríamos hablado con ella.*: “We would have spoken with her.”
- *Carlos habría comido antes.*: “Carlos would have eaten earlier.”
- *Mis amigos habrían vivido allí.*: “My friends would have lived there.”

The participle doesn't change for gender or number when it follows *haber*. Say *María habría llegado* and *María y Ana habrían llegado*, not *llegada* or *llegadas*.

## Common irregular past participles

Some frequent verbs have irregular past participles. The form of *haber* stays regular, but the participle takes a different form.

| Verb | Past participle | Conditional perfect example |
|---|---|---|
| *abrir*: to open | *abierto* | *Habría abierto la puerta.* |
| *decir*: to say | *dicho* | *Habrías dicho la verdad.* |
| *escribir*: to write | *escrito* | *Habríamos escrito antes.* |
| *hacer*: to do or make | *hecho* | *Habrían hecho la cena.* |
| *morir*: to die | *muerto* | *La planta habría muerto.* |
| *poner*: to put | *puesto* | *Habría puesto la mesa.* |
| *romper*: to break | *roto* | *Habrías roto el vaso.* |
| *ver*: to see | *visto* | *Habríamos visto el museo.* |
| *volver*: to return | *vuelto* | *Ellos habrían vuelto.* |

It helps to learn these as complete pairs, such as *habría hecho*, *habría dicho*, and *habría visto*. That way, you learn each participle in the tense where it's used.

## When to use the Spanish conditional perfect

### To imagine a different past

A common use is talking about something that didn't happen because the real situation was different.

Imagine that Marta missed a concert because she had to work. She says:

*Habría ido al concierto, pero tenía que trabajar.*: “I would have gone to the concert, but I had to work.”

The concert is over, and Marta didn't go. The conditional perfect shows the imagined result.

More examples:

- *Te habría llamado, pero perdí tu número.*: “I would have called you, but I lost your number.”
- *Habríamos comprado la casa, pero era demasiado cara.*: “We would have bought the house, but it was too expensive.”
- *Ellos habrían llegado antes, pero había mucho tráfico.*: “They would have arrived earlier, but there was a lot of traffic.”

### In past “if” sentences

The conditional perfect often appears in sentences about an unreal past condition. These sentences commonly follow this pattern:

**si + past perfect subjunctive, conditional perfect**

- *Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado el examen.*: “If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.”
- *Si hubieras venido, lo habrías conocido.*: “If you had come, you would have met him.”
- *Si no hubiera llovido, habríamos ido a la playa.*: “If it had not rained, we would have gone to the beach.”

The part after *si* gives the unreal condition. The conditional perfect gives its imagined result.

You can switch the two parts without changing the meaning:

*Habríamos ido a la playa si no hubiera llovido.*: “We would have gone to the beach if it had not rained.”

Don't normally put the conditional perfect directly after *si*. In standard Spanish, use *si hubiera/hubiese + participle*, not *si habría + participle*.

### To make a guess about the past

The conditional perfect can also show uncertainty or a guess about something that had already happened.

The simple conditional can serve a similar purpose: *Habría unas veinte personas* means “There were probably about twenty people.” With the conditional perfect, the guess concerns a completed past action:

- *Habrían salido antes de las ocho.*: “They had probably left before eight.”
- *¿Quién habría llamado tan tarde?*: “Who could have called so late?”
- *No lo sé; se habría olvidado.*: “I don’t know; he or she probably forgot.”

Context tells you whether the speaker means “would have” or is making a past guess.

### To report a future perfect idea from a past viewpoint

The conditional perfect also appears in reported speech. It can describe something that was expected to be complete later, viewed from a point in the past.

Direct statement:

*Para el viernes habré terminado.*: “By Friday, I will have finished.”

Reported later:

*Dijo que para el viernes habría terminado.*: “He said that by Friday he would have finished.”

This use appears in stories, news, and formal writing.

## How to make negative sentences and questions

For a negative sentence, put *no* before the form of *haber*:

- *No habría aceptado la oferta.*: “I would not have accepted the offer.”
- *No habríamos salido tan tarde.*: “We would not have left so late.”
- *Ellos nunca habrían hecho eso.*: “They would never have done that.”

Object pronouns also go before *haber*:

- *Lo habría comprado.*: “I would have bought it.”
- *Te habríamos ayudado.*: “We would have helped you.”
- *No se lo habría dicho.*: “I would not have told it to him or her.”

To ask a question, keep the same verb form and use question marks:

- *¿Habrías venido conmigo?*: “Would you have come with me?”
- *¿Qué habrías hecho?*: “What would you have done?”
- *¿Dónde habrían dormido?*: “Where would they have slept?”

## Conditional perfect versus simple conditional

The simple conditional talks about what someone would do. The conditional perfect talks about what someone would have done.

| Tense | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Simple conditional | *Viajaría a México.* | “I would travel to Mexico.” |
| Conditional perfect | *Habría viajado a México.* | “I would have traveled to Mexico.” |

Compare these sentences:

*Viajaría contigo el próximo año.*: “I would travel with you next year.”

*Habría viajado contigo el año pasado, pero no tenía dinero.*: “I would have traveled with you last year, but I didn’t have money.”

The first trip is still a possibility. The second belongs to an unreal past.

For more practice with the first form, try Espanido’s [simple conditional exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-simple/exercise?utm_content=conditional-perfect-guide). It shows the difference between *haría* and *habría hecho*.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Using the infinitive after *haber*

Incorrect: *Habría comprar la casa.*

Correct: *Habría comprado la casa.*: “I would have bought the house.”

The conditional perfect needs a past participle after *haber*.

### Conjugating both verbs

Incorrect: *Habríamos compramos la casa.*

Correct: *Habríamos comprado la casa.*: “We would have bought the house.”

Only *haber* matches the subject. The participle remains unchanged.

### Changing the participle for gender or number

Incorrect: *Ellas habrían llegadas temprano.*

Correct: *Ellas habrían llegado temprano.*: “They would have arrived early.”

A participle used with *haber* doesn't agree with the subject.

### Forgetting the accent in *haber*

Incorrect: *habria, habriamos*

Correct: *habría, habríamos*

Every conditional form of *haber* has a written accent on the *í*.

### Using *habría* after *si*

Incorrect: *Si habría sabido, te habría llamado.*

Correct: *Si hubiera sabido, te habría llamado.*: “If I had known, I would have called you.”

The result uses the conditional perfect. The unreal condition after *si* normally uses *hubiera* or *hubiese* plus a participle.

## A quick way to build your own sentences

Start with a real past event: “I did not go because I was tired.” Then imagine the alternative:

1. Choose the subject: *yo*.
2. Select the matching form of *haber*: *habría*.
3. Make the participle of *ir*: *ido*.
4. Add the real reason: *pero estaba cansado*.

The result is:

*Habría ido, pero estaba cansado.*: “I would have gone, but I was tired.”

Try the same process with these prompts:

- We did not eat there because it was closed.
- She did not call because she was busy.
- They did not buy the tickets because they were expensive.

Possible answers are:

- *Habríamos comido allí, pero estaba cerrado.*: “We would have eaten there, but it was closed.”
- *Ella habría llamado, pero estaba ocupada.*: “She would have called, but she was busy.”
- *Habrían comprado las entradas, pero eran caras.*: “They would have bought the tickets, but they were expensive.”

Use the [Spanish conditional perfect exercise on Espanido](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-compuesto/exercise?utm_content=conditional-perfect-guide) to practice choosing the correct form in full sentences. You can also review the [conditional perfect rule and examples](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-compuesto) before starting.

## A simple memory trick

Think of the conditional perfect as a backward-looking “would have.”

First, choose the “would have” helper: *habría, habrías, habríamos, habríais,* or *habrían*. Then add a participle such as *hablado, comido, vivido, hecho,* or *visto*.

**Habría + participle = would have + past participle**

For example, *habría visto* means “would have seen,” while *habríamos hecho* means “we would have done.”

## Frequently asked questions

### What is *haber* in the conditional perfect?

*Haber* is the helping verb in this tense. Its conditional forms are *habría, habrías, habría, habríamos, habríais,* and *habrían*.

### What does *habría* mean in English?

Before a past participle, *habría* often means “I would have,” “he would have,” “she would have,” or “you would have.” The subject and context show which meaning is correct.

### Is *habría habido* correct?

Yes. It means “there would have been” or, in some contexts, “there had probably been.” For example, *Habría habido más gente si no hubiera llovido* means “There would have been more people if it had not rained.”

### Does the past participle agree with the subject?

No. After *haber*, it stays unchanged. Use *habría llegado* for one woman, one man, or any formal singular subject.

### What is the difference between *habría hecho* and *haría*?

*Haría* means “I, he, she, or you would do.” *Habría hecho* means “I, he, she, or you would have done,” so it looks back at an imagined or uncertain past.

## Final check

To form the Spanish conditional perfect, conjugate *haber* in the conditional and add a past participle. Use it mainly for unreal past results, past guesses, and future events reported from a past viewpoint.

When you write a sentence, check three things: the correct form of *haber*, the correct past participle, and the accent on *í*.

How to form the Spanish conditional perfect

To say “I would travel,” “Could you help me?” or “What would you do?” in Spanish, you'll usually need the conditional tense. The basic form follows a consistent pattern.

Want to practice right away? [Start the condicional simple exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-simple/exercise?utm_content=conditional-tense-spanish).

![Student learning how to use the conditional tense in Spanish with would, could, and should examples](/assets/blog/how-to-use-the-conditional-tense-in-spanish/og-image.png)

## What is the Spanish conditional tense?

The conditional tense often expresses what **would** happen in a certain situation.

- *Viajaría más si tuviera tiempo.* — I would travel more if I had time.
- *Compraríamos la casa, pero es muy cara.* — We would buy the house, but it is very expensive.
- *¿Qué harías tú?* — What would you do?

In English, we normally use **would + verb**. In Spanish, the idea of “would” is built into the verb ending.

For example, *hablar* means “to speak.” Depending on the subject, *hablaría* can mean “I would speak,” formal singular “you would speak,” or “he/she would speak.”

Spanish calls this tense the *condicional simple*. You can review its forms in Espanido’s [conditional tense guide](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-simple).

## How to form the conditional tense

To form the conditional, keep the whole infinitive and add a conditional ending. The infinitive is the basic form ending in *-ar*, *-er*, or *-ir*, such as *hablar*, *comer*, or *vivir*.

The formula is:

**infinitive + conditional ending**

| Subject | Ending | Hablar | Comer | Vivir |
|---|---:|---|---|---|
| yo | -ía | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| tú | -ías | hablarías | comerías | vivirías |
| él, ella, usted | -ía | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| nosotros/as | -íamos | hablaríamos | comeríamos | viviríamos |
| vosotros/as | -íais | hablaríais | comeríais | viviríais |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | -ían | hablarían | comerían | vivirían |

All three verb groups use the same endings. Don't remove *-ar*, *-er*, or *-ir* first.

- *Yo hablaría con Ana.* — I would speak with Ana.
- *Tú comerías allí.* — You would eat there.
- *Ellos vivirían en Madrid.* — They would live in Madrid.

Every conditional ending has a written accent on the **í**, so be sure to include it.

## The main uses of the conditional

The Spanish conditional tense appears in several everyday situations. It does more than create sentences with *si*, meaning “if.”

### Talking about hypothetical situations

Use the conditional to describe an imagined result or something that isn't currently real.

- *Viviría cerca del mar.* — I would live near the sea.
- *Con más dinero, viajaríamos por Sudamérica.* — With more money, we would travel around South America.
- *Ella aceptaría el trabajo, pero está muy lejos.* — She would accept the job, but it is very far away.

Imagine that Marta lives in a cold city but thinks about living near the beach. She might say:

*Yo viviría en Málaga, tendría una bicicleta y nadaría cada mañana.* — I would live in Málaga, have a bicycle, and swim every morning.

These are imagined plans rather than confirmed future events, so the conditional fits.

### Saying what you would do

Questions with *¿Qué harías...?* let you discuss choices and imagined problems.

- *¿Qué harías en mi lugar?* — What would you do in my place?
- *¿Adónde irías de vacaciones?* — Where would you go on vacation?
- *¿Con quién hablarías primero?* — Who would you speak with first?

You can answer in the same tense:

*Yo hablaría primero con mi jefe.* — I would speak with my boss first.

### Making polite requests

The conditional can make a request sound softer and more polite. This is especially common with *poder*, meaning “to be able to.”

- *¿Podrías ayudarme?* — Could you help me?
- *¿Podría ver el menú?* — Could I see the menu?
- *¿Podrían hablar más despacio?* — Could you speak more slowly?

Compare *¿Puedes ayudarme?* with *¿Podrías ayudarme?* Both are correct, but the second often sounds gentler.

You'll also hear *me gustaría*, which literally means “it would please me” but is commonly translated as “I would like.”

- *Me gustaría un café.* — I would like a coffee.
- *Nos gustaría reservar una habitación.* — We would like to book a room.

### Giving advice

The conditional form of *deber*, *debería*, is a common way to say “should.”

- *Deberías descansar.* — You should rest.
- *Deberíamos salir temprano.* — We should leave early.
- *No deberías preocuparte tanto.* — You should not worry so much.

For softer advice, you can use *yo que tú*, meaning “if I were you.”

*Yo que tú, hablaría con la profesora.* — If I were you, I would speak with the teacher.

### Talking about the future from a past viewpoint

The conditional can describe an event that was still in the future at an earlier moment. This is often called the “future in the past.”

- *Ana dijo que llegaría a las ocho.* — Ana said that she would arrive at eight.
- *Pensábamos que sería fácil.* — We thought it would be easy.
- *Me prometió que llamaría.* — He or she promised me that they would call.

At the earlier moment, Ana’s arrival was still in the future. Because the main verb is in the past, Spanish uses the conditional for the later event.

### Making a guess about the past

Spanish sometimes uses the conditional to make a careful guess about a past situation.

- *Serían las diez cuando salió.* — It was probably about ten when he left.
- *Tendría unos treinta años.* — He or she was probably around thirty years old.
- *Habría mucha gente allí.* — There were probably many people there.

This use doesn't translate directly as “would” in English. Instead, it suggests that the speaker is estimating rather than stating a fact.

## Irregular conditional verbs

Some common verbs change their stem before taking the regular conditional endings. The endings themselves stay the same.

| Infinitive | Irregular stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| decir — to say | dir- | *diría* — I would say |
| hacer — to do or make | har- | *haría* — I would do |
| poder — to be able to | podr- | *podría* — I could |
| poner — to put | pondr- | *pondría* — I would put |
| querer — to want | querr- | *querría* — I would want |
| saber — to know | sabr- | *sabría* — I would know |
| salir — to leave | saldr- | *saldría* — I would leave |
| tener — to have | tendr- | *tendría* — I would have |
| venir — to come | vendr- | *vendría* — I would come |

Many of these stems also appear in the Spanish future tense. Once you learn *tendr-*, for example, you can build both *tendría* and *tendrá*.

Rather than memorizing an isolated list, learn the irregular verbs in short sentences:

- *No sabría qué decir.* — I would not know what to say.
- *Vendríamos mañana.* — We would come tomorrow.
- *¿Podrías cerrar la puerta?* — Could you close the door?

## How the conditional works with si

A common pattern for unreal or unlikely situations is:

**si + imperfect subjunctive + conditional**

Here, the imperfect subjunctive presents an imagined condition.

- *Si tuviera tiempo, aprendería italiano.* — If I had time, I would learn Italian.
- *Si viviéramos cerca, nos veríamos más.* — If we lived nearby, we would see each other more.
- *Si fueras presidente, ¿qué cambiarías?* — If you were president, what would you change?

The *si* clause gives the imagined condition, while the conditional gives the result.

The conditional doesn't normally go directly after *si* in this pattern. Avoid sentences such as *si tendría tiempo*. Say *si tuviera tiempo* instead.

To practice both halves of this structure, try Espanido’s [Spanish conditional sentence exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/oraciones-condicionales/exercise?utm_content=conditional-tense-spanish).

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Removing the infinitive ending

Don't treat the conditional like the present tense. Keep the full infinitive.

- Use this method: *hablar + ía = hablaría*
- Don't build it by treating *habl-* as the conditional stem, even though it produces the same written form in this example.

Remembering the full-infinitive rule also helps with forms such as *comería* and *viviríamos*.

### Forgetting the accent

The conditional endings always contain an accented *í*.

- Incorrect: *podria*
- Correct: *podría* — I could or he/she could

### Using the conditional after si

For an unreal present situation, don't say *si tendría*. Use the imperfect subjunctive after *si*.

- Incorrect: *Si tendría dinero, viajaría.*
- Correct: *Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.* — If I had money, I would travel.

### Confusing would with used to

English “would” can describe repeated past actions, but Spanish usually uses the imperfect tense for that meaning.

- *Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque cada día.* — When I was a child, I would play in the park every day.

Here, *jugaba* describes a past habit. By contrast, *jugaría* would suggest an imagined action.

## A quick way to choose the conditional

Choose the tense based on the sentence's meaning.

| Meaning | Useful Spanish form |
|---|---|
| An imagined result | *Viajaría.* — I would travel. |
| A polite request | *¿Podrías ayudarme?* — Could you help me? |
| Advice | *Deberías estudiar.* — You should study. |
| Future viewed from the past | *Dijo que vendría.* — He said he would come. |
| A repeated past habit | *Viajaba cada verano.* — I would travel every summer. |

Focusing on meaning helps you avoid translating every English word separately.

## Practice the conditional tense

Start with regular verbs, then add common irregular verbs such as *hacer*, *poder*, *tener*, and *decir*.

You can test these forms with Espanido’s [conditional tense practice exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/condicional-simple/exercise?utm_content=conditional-tense-spanish). The questions help you check whether you need the full infinitive or an irregular stem.

You can also write answers to these prompts:

1. *¿Qué harías con un mes libre?* — What would you do with a free month?
2. *¿Dónde vivirías si pudieras elegir cualquier lugar?* — Where would you live if you could choose any place?
3. *¿Qué consejo le darías a un estudiante nuevo?* — What advice would you give a new student?

Write two or three sentences for each answer, using verbs that relate to your own life.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Spanish conditional difficult?

The basic pattern is consistent because *-ar*, *-er*, and *-ir* verbs all use the same endings. You'll also need to learn the irregular stems used by some common verbs.

### Does the conditional always mean would?

Not always. Depending on the verb and context, it can also express “could,” “should,” polite wishes, or a guess about the past.

### Can I use the conditional after si?

Not normally in unreal patterns such as “If I had time, I would go.” Spanish uses the imperfect subjunctive after *si*: *Si tuviera tiempo, iría*.

### What is the difference between podría and pude?

*Podría* means “I could” in a polite, possible, or imagined sense. *Pude* means “I managed to” or “I was able to” in a completed past situation.

### How can I remember the endings?

Say the sequence aloud: *-ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían*. Then apply it to several verbs without removing their infinitive endings.

## The key idea to remember

For most verbs, form the Spanish conditional by keeping the infinitive and adding the correct ending. Use it for imagined results, polite requests, advice, the future viewed from the past, and careful guesses.

Learn the regular pattern, add common irregular stems, and practice with short sentences you might use.

How to use the conditional tense in Spanish

Knowing how to say the day or date helps with plans, bookings, birthdays and everyday conversation. This guide covers the Spanish days of the week with pronunciation, all 12 months, date patterns and common phrases.

## The days of the week in Spanish

Here are the seven days of the week in Spanish. The pronunciation guides are English-friendly approximations, with the stressed part shown in capital letters.

| English | Spanish | Simple pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | lunes | LOO-nes |
| Tuesday | martes | MAR-tes |
| Wednesday | miércoles | MYEHR-koh-les |
| Thursday | jueves | HWEH-bes |
| Friday | viernes | BYEHR-nes |
| Saturday | sábado | SAH-bah-doh |
| Sunday | domingo | doh-MEEN-goh |

A Spanish week normally begins with **lunes**, not domingo. You'll often see calendars arranged from Monday to Sunday.

Examples:

- **Hoy es lunes.** Today is Monday.
- **Mañana es martes.** Tomorrow is Tuesday.
- **El concierto es el viernes.** The concert is on Friday.
- **Trabajo de lunes a jueves.** I work from Monday to Thursday.
- **Nos vemos el sábado.** See you on Saturday.

Spanish usually uses **es** when identifying the current day: **Hoy es miércoles**. For an event on a certain day, it normally uses **el**: **La reunión es el miércoles**.

## Are days of the week capitalized in Spanish?

No. Days of the week are normally written with a lowercase letter in Spanish.

- Correct: **Hoy es viernes.** Today is Friday.
- Incorrect: **Hoy es Viernes.**

English capitalizes Monday, Tuesday and the other day names. Spanish doesn't, unless the day starts a sentence or appears in a title where another style rule applies.

The same lowercase rule applies to months:

- **Mi cumpleaños es en agosto.** My birthday is in August.
- **Viajamos en diciembre.** We are traveling in December.

## How to say “on Monday” and “on Mondays”

Spanish doesn't usually need a word that directly matches English “on” before a day. It uses the definite articles **el** and **los** instead.

Use **el** for one specific day:

- **Tengo una cita el lunes.** I have an appointment on Monday.
- **La clase empieza el martes.** The class starts on Tuesday.

Use **los** for something that happens regularly:

- **Estudio español los lunes.** I study Spanish on Mondays.
- **Jugamos al tenis los sábados.** We play tennis on Saturdays.

From Monday to Friday is **de lunes a viernes**. You don't need an article in this pattern.

- **La tienda abre de lunes a viernes.** The store opens from Monday to Friday.
- **Trabajo de martes a sábado.** I work from Tuesday to Saturday.

One plural detail is worth noting. **Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves** and **viernes** don't change their spelling in the plural. Only the article changes: **el lunes** becomes **los lunes**.

**Sábado** and **domingo** do change:

- **el sábado → los sábados**
- **el domingo → los domingos**

## How to remember the Spanish days of the week

Learning the list in order is useful, but connections between the names can make it easier to remember.

**Lunes** is connected to **luna**, meaning “moon.” Think of Monday as moon day.

**Martes** is linked to Mars. **Miércoles** is linked to Mercury, while **jueves** is linked to Jupiter. These planet connections can help you keep the middle of the week in order.

**Viernes** is connected to Venus. For **sábado**, think of the Sabbath.

You can also learn the days through your weekly routine. Say one true sentence for each day:

- **Los lunes estudio español.** On Mondays I study Spanish.
- **Los miércoles voy al gimnasio.** On Wednesdays I go to the gym.
- **Los viernes veo una película.** On Fridays I watch a movie.

Personal sentences provide context that an isolated list doesn't. After reading the examples, test yourself with Espanido’s [days, months and dates lesson](https://espanido.com/rules/dias-de-la-semana-meses-fechas).

## The months in Spanish

Spanish month names are also written in lowercase. Here are all 12:

| English | Spanish |
|---|---|
| January | enero |
| February | febrero |
| March | marzo |
| April | abril |
| May | mayo |
| June | junio |
| July | julio |
| August | agosto |
| September | septiembre |
| October | octubre |
| November | noviembre |
| December | diciembre |

Many of these look similar to English, but watch the spelling. January is **enero**, not a word beginning with “j.” September is usually **septiembre**, although **setiembre** is also accepted in some places.

Use **en** when talking generally about a month:

- **Voy a México en marzo.** I am going to Mexico in March.
- **Hace calor en julio.** It is hot in July.
- **Las clases terminan en junio.** Classes end in June.

For a full date, use **de** before the month:

- **el 10 de abril**: April 10
- **el 22 de noviembre**: November 22

## How to say dates in Spanish

A common Spanish date pattern is:

**el + number + de + month + de + year**

For example:

- **el 14 de febrero de 2026**: February 14, 2026
- **el 3 de junio de 2025**: June 3, 2025
- **el 25 de diciembre de 2026**: December 25, 2026

Spanish puts the day before the month. That's different from the common US English order, which puts the month first.

To use a date in a complete sentence, follow these patterns:

- **Hoy es 8 de mayo.** Today is May 8.
- **La fiesta es el 8 de mayo.** The party is on May 8.
- **Mi cumpleaños es el 12 de octubre.** My birthday is on October 12.

For the first day of a month, both **uno** and **primero** may be heard, depending on the region and context:

- **el primero de enero**: January 1
- **el uno de enero**: January 1

For all other dates, use the normal number: **el dos de enero**, **el quince de marzo** and **el treinta de agosto**.

## How to write dates with numbers

Spanish-speaking countries generally write numerical dates in day-month-year order.

- **05/09/2026** usually means September 5, 2026.
- In common US formatting, the same date may be understood as May 9, 2026.

This difference can cause confusion. When arranging travel, appointments or bookings, it's clearer to write the month as a word: **5 de septiembre de 2026**.

In formal writing, you may see the place before the date:

**Madrid, 5 de septiembre de 2026**

You don't normally add English endings such as “st,” “nd,” “rd” or “th.” Write **el 4 de julio**, not the Spanish equivalent of “July 4th.”

## Useful questions about days and dates

These questions work in many everyday situations:

- **¿Qué día es hoy?** What day is it today?
- **¿A qué día estamos?** What is today’s date?
- **¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?** What is today’s date?
- **¿Cuándo es la reunión?** When is the meeting?
- **¿Qué día te viene bien?** What day works for you?
- **¿Para qué fecha?** For what date?

Here is a short conversation:

**Ana:** ¿Cuándo es la cena?
**Luis:** Es el viernes.
**Ana:** ¿Qué fecha?
**Luis:** El 18 de abril.

In English:

**Ana:** When is the dinner?
**Luis:** It's on Friday.
**Ana:** What date?
**Luis:** April 18.

This exchange shows the difference between **día**, which can mean a weekday, and **fecha**, which means a calendar date.

## Today, tomorrow and other useful time words

You don't always need to name a day. These short words are common in conversation:

| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| hoy | today |
| mañana | tomorrow |
| ayer | yesterday |
| pasado mañana | the day after tomorrow |
| anteayer | the day before yesterday |
| esta semana | this week |
| la próxima semana | next week |
| el fin de semana | the weekend |

Examples:

- **Hoy es jueves.** Today is Thursday.
- **Mañana tengo clase.** I have class tomorrow.
- **Nos vamos el fin de semana.** We are leaving for the weekend.
- **La cita es la próxima semana.** The appointment is next week.

**Mañana** can mean “tomorrow” or “morning.” The context makes the meaning clear: **Hasta mañana** means “See you tomorrow,” while **por la mañana** means “in the morning.”

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Capitalizing day and month names

Write **lunes** and **enero**, not **Lunes** and **Enero**, in a normal sentence.

### Using en before a weekday

Don't translate “on Monday” word for word. Say **el lunes**, not **en lunes**.

- **Te llamo el lunes.** I'll call you on Monday.

### Putting the month before the day

In Spanish, say **el 7 de agosto**, literally “the 7 of August.” This order also helps you read numerical dates correctly.

### Forgetting the article for events

When a meeting, class or party happens on a specific day, include **el**:

- **La reunión es el martes.** The meeting is on Tuesday.

### Adding de where it is not needed

Use **de** inside a full date, but not between a general month and a phrase with **en**.

- **Viajo en mayo.** I travel in May.
- **Viajo el 6 de mayo.** I travel on May 6.

## A quick practice routine

Start by saying today’s day and date aloud. Then add one sentence about tomorrow and one about your next weekend.

For example:

1. **Hoy es miércoles.** Today is Wednesday.
2. **Hoy es 9 de abril.** Today is April 9.
3. **Mañana trabajo.** Tomorrow I work.
4. **El sábado voy al mercado.** On Saturday I am going to the market.

Change the sentences each day to connect the words to your routine.

You can then complete the [Spanish days, months and dates practice exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/dias-de-la-semana-meses-fechas/exercise?utm_content=spanish-days-months-dates) to check articles, spelling and date order.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the first day of the week in Spanish?

Monday, or **lunes**, is normally treated as the first day of the week in Spanish calendars. Sunday is **domingo**.

### Are Spanish days of the week masculine or feminine?

They're masculine. Use **el** for one day and **los** for repeated days: **el martes**, **los martes**.

### Do Spanish days of the week have capital letters?

Not in normal sentences. Write **viernes**, not **Viernes**. Months are also lowercase.

### How do you ask what day it is in Spanish?

Ask **¿Qué día es hoy?** This usually asks for the weekday. To ask for the calendar date, use **¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?**

### How do you say a birthday date in Spanish?

Use **Mi cumpleaños es el + number + de + month**. For example, **Mi cumpleaños es el 20 de junio** means “My birthday is June 20.”

### What is the easiest way to learn Spanish days and months?

Use them in short personal sentences instead of only repeating a list. Say today’s date, describe your weekly routine and add important birthdays or plans to a Spanish calendar.

Spanish days, months and dates you can use today

Spanish nouns are usually masculine or feminine. Common endings can help you identify gender, but it’s useful to learn each new noun with its article.

Want to practice right away? [Start the plural de los sustantivos exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/plural-de-los-sustantivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-gender-of-nouns-rules).

![Spanish gender of nouns rules showing el, la, masculine and feminine noun endings](/assets/blog/spanish-gender-of-nouns-rules/og-image.png)

## What does gender mean in Spanish?

Every Spanish noun has a grammatical gender. A noun is usually either masculine or feminine, even when it names an object with no natural gender.

For example:

- *el libro*: the book
- *la mesa*: the table
- *el teléfono*: the phone
- *la ciudad*: the city

A table isn’t female, and a phone isn’t male. Gender is part of the Spanish word and affects the words around it.

Articles such as *el*, *la*, *un*, and *una* must match the noun. Describing words, called adjectives, often change to match it too.

- *el libro rojo*: the red book
- *la mesa roja*: the red table
- *un teléfono nuevo*: a new phone
- *una ciudad nueva*: a new city

This matching is called agreement. It means that connected words use the same gender and number.

## The common pattern: nouns ending in -o and -a

Many masculine nouns end in **-o**, while many feminine nouns end in **-a**.

| Common pattern | Examples |
|---|---|
| **-o** is often masculine | *el libro*, *el vaso*, *el perro* |
| **-a** is often feminine | *la casa*, *la ventana*, *la camisa* |

Here are the patterns in full sentences:

- *El perro es pequeño.*: The dog is small.
- *La casa es pequeña.*: The house is small.
- *Tengo un vaso blanco.*: I have a white glass.
- *Tengo una camisa blanca.*: I have a white shirt.

These patterns have exceptions, so don’t rely on the final letter alone.

## Important exceptions to -o and -a

Some masculine nouns end in **-a**:

- *el día*: the day
- *el mapa*: the map
- *el planeta*: the planet
- *el problema*: the problem
- *el tema*: the topic
- *el idioma*: the language

Several of these words came from Greek. You don’t need to study their history, but you may notice the pattern in words such as *problema*, *tema*, and *sistema*.

A few feminine nouns end in **-o**:

- *la mano*: the hand
- *la foto*: the photo
- *la moto*: the motorbike

*Foto* is a shortened form of *fotografía*, and *moto* comes from *motocicleta*. Their feminine gender remains after the words are shortened.

Learn the article and noun together. Instead of memorizing *problema*, learn *el problema*. For *mano*, learn *la mano* rather than the noun alone.

## Feminine noun endings

Several endings are strong clues that a noun is feminine.

### Nouns ending in -ción and -sión

Words ending in **-ción** or **-sión** are usually feminine:

- *la canción*: the song
- *la información*: the information
- *la conversación*: the conversation
- *la televisión*: the television
- *la decisión*: the decision

For example, *Es una decisión importante* means “It is an important decision.” The article *una* shows that the noun is feminine.

### Nouns ending in -dad and -tad

These nouns are generally feminine:

- *la ciudad*: the city
- *la universidad*: the university
- *la verdad*: the truth
- *la libertad*: freedom
- *la amistad*: friendship

They may not end in *-a*, but their endings provide a useful clue.

### Nouns ending in -tud and -umbre

These endings also usually mark feminine nouns:

- *la actitud*: the attitude
- *la juventud*: youth
- *la costumbre*: the custom or habit
- *la incertidumbre*: uncertainty

For example, *Es una buena costumbre* means “It is a good habit.” Both *una* and *buena* agree with the feminine noun *costumbre*.

## Common masculine noun endings

Nouns ending in **-aje** are normally masculine:

- *el viaje*: the trip
- *el mensaje*: the message
- *el paisaje*: the landscape
- *el garaje*: the garage

Many nouns ending in **-or** are also masculine:

- *el color*: the color
- *el error*: the mistake
- *el calor*: the heat
- *el amor*: love

Feminine exceptions include *la flor* (the flower) and *la labor* (the task or work).

Names of languages are masculine too:

- *el español*: Spanish
- *el inglés*: English
- *el francés*: French

For example, *El español es interesante* means “Spanish is interesting.”

## Nouns for people and animals

With people and many animals, gender often corresponds to the person’s or animal’s sex. The ending may change from **-o** to **-a**:

- *el niño / la niña*: the boy / the girl
- *el abuelo / la abuela*: the grandfather / the grandmother
- *el gato / la gata*: the male cat / the female cat

Some nouns keep the same form and change only the article:

- *el estudiante / la estudiante*: the male student / the female student
- *el artista / la artista*: the male artist / the female artist
- *el cantante / la cantante*: the male singer / the female singer

Other pairs use different words:

- *el hombre / la mujer*: the man / the woman
- *el padre / la madre*: the father / the mother
- *el caballo / la yegua*: the horse / the mare

When talking about professions, usage can vary by region and personal preference. If you know which form a person uses, follow it when describing them.

## The special case of feminine nouns beginning with stressed a

A small group of feminine nouns use **el** in the singular because they begin with a stressed *a-* or *ha-* sound. This prevents two stressed *a* sounds from occurring together.

- *el agua fría*: the cold water
- *el águila blanca*: the white eagle
- *el hacha vieja*: the old axe
- *el aula pequeña*: the small classroom

These nouns are still feminine. Their adjectives use feminine forms: *fría*, *blanca*, *vieja*, and *pequeña*.

They also commonly use *un* in the singular:

- *un águila blanca*: a white eagle
- *un aula pequeña*: a small classroom

In the plural, they return to the regular feminine article:

- *las aguas frías*: the cold waters
- *las águilas blancas*: the white eagles
- *las aulas pequeñas*: the small classrooms

## Gender can change a word’s meaning

A few nouns have different meanings depending on whether you use *el* or *la*.

| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
| *el capital*: money or capital | *la capital*: capital city |
| *el cometa*: comet | *la cometa*: kite |
| *el cura*: priest | *la cura*: cure |
| *el orden*: order or arrangement | *la orden*: command |

Compare these examples:

- *Madrid es la capital de España.*: Madrid is the capital of Spain.
- *La empresa necesita más capital.*: The company needs more capital.
- *El niño tiene una cometa.*: The boy has a kite.
- *Vimos un cometa en el cielo.*: We saw a comet in the sky.

Here, the article indicates which meaning is intended.

## How gender works with plural nouns

Making a noun plural doesn’t change its gender. A masculine noun stays masculine, and a feminine noun stays feminine.

- *el libro → los libros*: the book → the books
- *la casa → las casas*: the house → the houses
- *el papel → los papeles*: the paper → the papers
- *la ciudad → las ciudades*: the city → the cities

Spanish plural nouns usually add **-s** after an unstressed vowel and **-es** after a consonant. The article and adjective must become plural as well:

- *la casa blanca → las casas blancas*: the white house → the white houses
- *el papel importante → los papeles importantes*: the important paper → the important papers

You can review when to use *-s* or *-es* in the [Spanish plural noun rules guide](https://espanido.com/rules/plural-de-los-sustantivos). Then test singular and plural nouns in Spanish with this [short plural nouns exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/plural-de-los-sustantivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-gender-of-nouns-rules).

## Common gender mistakes

### Guessing from the English word

English nouns don’t usually have grammatical gender, so translation can’t tell you whether a Spanish noun is masculine or feminine. Learn *la leche*, not simply *leche*, and *el pan*, not simply *pan*.

### Trusting the final letter every time

The *-o* and *-a* patterns are helpful, but words such as *el día*, *el problema*, and *la mano* show why you need to learn exceptions.

### Matching the adjective to the person speaking

The adjective matches the noun it describes, not necessarily the speaker. A man and a woman would both say *Tengo una camisa roja*, meaning “I have a red shirt.” *Roja* matches *camisa*.

### Forgetting agreement in longer sentences

It’s possible to choose the correct article but forget to change the adjective:

- Incorrect: *la casa blanco*
- Correct: *la casa blanca*: the white house

- Incorrect: *los libros nueva*
- Correct: *los libros nuevos*: the new books

For focused practice, study the [rules for noun gender](https://espanido.com/rules/genero-de-los-sustantivos) and then complete the [Spanish noun gender exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/genero-de-los-sustantivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-gender-of-nouns-rules).

## A practical way to remember noun gender

Use these four habits when learning vocabulary:

1. **Always include the article.** Write *la puerta*, not just *puerta*.
2. **Add a short example.** Try *La puerta está abierta*: “The door is open.”
3. **Group words by ending.** Keep lists for *-ción*, *-dad*, *-aje*, and other common patterns.
4. **Mark exceptions clearly.** Highlight words such as *el problema* and *la mano*.

You can also use color as a reminder, but include the article as well. Say the article and noun aloud together: *el viaje*, *la canción*, *el mapa*.

Practice with a few nouns at a time. Check your answers, then return to the words you find difficult.

## Quick gender checklist

When you meet a new Spanish noun, check:

- Does it end in common masculine *-o* or feminine *-a*?
- Does it have a clue such as *-ción*, *-dad*, or *-aje*?
- Is it a known exception?
- What article appears with it in the dictionary or sentence?
- Do the article and adjective agree with the noun?

If you’re unsure, check a dictionary rather than guessing. Dictionaries commonly list nouns with **m** for masculine or **f** for feminine.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are all Spanish nouns ending in -a feminine?

No. Many are feminine, but common masculine exceptions include *el día*, *el mapa*, *el planeta*, *el problema*, and *el tema*.

### Are all nouns ending in -o masculine?

No. Many are masculine, but *la mano* is an important exception. Shortened words such as *la foto* and *la moto* are feminine too.

### Why is it el agua if agua is feminine?

*Agua* uses *el* in the singular because it begins with a stressed *a* sound. It remains feminine, so you say *el agua fría* and *las aguas frías*.

### Does noun gender change in the plural?

No. Only the number changes. *El libro* becomes *los libros*, while *la mesa* becomes *las mesas*.

### How can I learn Spanish noun gender?

Learn each noun with its article and a short phrase. Use common endings as clues, and note exceptions such as *el problema* and *la mano*.

## Keep practicing

Treat the article and noun as a unit: *la ciudad*, *el viaje*, and *el problema*.

Review common endings, note exceptions, and check that articles and adjectives match the noun.

Spanish gender of nouns rules

You know that *tener* means “to have,” but Spanish uses it in many places where English uses “to be,” “to feel,” or another verb. These common patterns let you talk about hunger, plans, fear, age, sleep, and daily needs.

![Everyday Spanish expressions with tener, including tengo hambre, tengo ganas, and tengo miedo](/assets/blog/spanish-expressions-with-tener-youll-actually-use/og-image.png)

## The essential idea behind tener expressions

Consider these everyday sentences:

- *Tengo hambre.*: I’m hungry.
- *Tenemos sueño.*: We’re sleepy.
- *Ana tiene miedo.*: Ana is afraid.
- *Tienes razón.*: You’re right.

Spanish treats these ideas as things you “have.” A word-for-word translation may sound strange in English, but the Spanish pattern is simple: use the correct form of *tener* followed by the expression.

In the present tense, the forms are:

| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | *tengo* | *Tengo sed.*: I’m thirsty. |
| tú | *tienes* | *Tienes suerte.*: You’re lucky. |
| él, ella, usted | *tiene* | *Ella tiene frío.*: She’s cold. |
| nosotros/as | *tenemos* | *Tenemos prisa.*: We’re in a hurry. |
| vosotros/as | *tenéis* | *Tenéis razón.*: You’re right. |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | *tienen* | *Tienen sueño.*: They’re sleepy. |

Notice the irregular first-person form *tengo*. The other forms use the changing stem *tien-*, except for *tenemos* and *tenéis*.

If you want to review these forms, use Espanido’s [tener conjugation exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-tener) before working on the full expressions.

## Tener hambre, tener sed, and tener sueño

Three common expressions describe basic physical needs:

- *tener hambre*: to be hungry
- *tener sed*: to be thirsty
- *tener sueño*: to be sleepy

Imagine that you’ve been walking around Madrid all afternoon. You might say:

*Tengo hambre y sed. Vamos a buscar un café.*: I’m hungry and thirsty. Let’s find a café.

Later that evening, you could say:

*Ya tengo sueño. Me voy a casa.*: I’m sleepy now. I’m going home.

English speakers may try to use *estar* and say *estoy hambre*. That doesn’t work. Hunger, thirst, and sleepiness use *tener*, not *estar*.

Another common mistake is adding an article:

- Correct: *Tengo hambre.*
- Incorrect: *Tengo una hambre.*

Normally, you don’t put *un*, *una*, *el*, or *la* before *hambre*, *sed*, or *sueño*. You can, however, add words that show intensity:

- *Tengo mucha hambre.*: I’m very hungry.
- *¿Tienes mucha sed?*: Are you very thirsty?
- *Los niños tienen muchísimo sueño.*: The children are extremely sleepy.

## Tener frío and tener calor

Spanish also uses *tener* to say that a person feels cold or hot:

- *Tengo frío.*: I’m cold.
- *¿Tienes calor?*: Are you hot?
- *Tenemos mucho frío aquí.*: We’re very cold here.

These phrases describe how someone feels. To describe the weather or the temperature of an object, you need a different structure.

Compare:

- *Tengo calor.*: I feel hot.
- *Hace calor.*: The weather is hot.
- *El café está caliente.*: The coffee is hot.

This distinction can prevent a misunderstanding. *Estoy caliente* can have meanings you may not intend when you simply want to say that the room feels hot. Use *Tengo calor* in that situation.

## Tener ganas de: feeling like doing something

Use *tener ganas de* when you feel like doing something or are in the mood for it. Place an infinitive, the basic form of a verb, after *de*:

- *Tengo ganas de bailar.*: I feel like dancing.
- *¿Tienes ganas de salir?*: Do you feel like going out?
- *No tenemos ganas de cocinar.*: We don’t feel like cooking.

A noun can also follow *de*:

- *Tengo ganas de café.*: I feel like having coffee.
- *Tenemos ganas de vacaciones.*: We’re eager for a vacation.

Don’t leave out *de*. The complete pattern is *tener ganas de + noun or infinitive*.

### The difference between tener ganas and querer

*Tener ganas de* and *querer* can both express a desire, but they don’t always feel the same.

*Querer* means “to want” and can describe a clear wish, choice, or goal:

*Quiero aprender español.*: I want to learn Spanish.

*Tener ganas de* is closer to “to feel like” or “to be in the mood to.” It often describes your feeling at that moment:

*Hoy tengo ganas de practicar español.*: Today I feel like practicing Spanish.

Compare these two sentences:

- *Quiero ir al gimnasio tres veces por semana.*: I want to go to the gym three times a week.
- *No tengo ganas de ir al gimnasio hoy.*: I don’t feel like going to the gym today.

Both statements can be true. You can want a long-term result while not feeling like taking action today.

## Tener miedo: talking about fear

*Tener miedo* means “to be afraid.” It can stand alone when the source of the fear is already clear:

*No quiero entrar. Tengo miedo.*: I don’t want to go in. I’m afraid.

To name the thing that causes fear, you’ll often hear *tener miedo a* or *tener miedo de*:

- *Tengo miedo a las arañas.*: I’m afraid of spiders.
- *El niño tiene miedo de la oscuridad.*: The child is afraid of the dark.
- *Tenemos miedo de perdernos.*: We’re afraid of getting lost.

Usage can vary by region, but *de* is especially common before an infinitive:

*Tengo miedo de hablar en público.*: I’m afraid of speaking in public.

To say that you aren’t afraid, put *no* before *tener*:

*No tengo miedo de cometer errores.*: I’m not afraid of making mistakes.

## Tener que: saying what you have to do

Use *tener que + infinitive* for an obligation or something necessary:

- *Tengo que trabajar.*: I have to work.
- *Tenemos que comprar pan.*: We have to buy bread.
- *¿Tienes que salir ahora?*: Do you have to leave now?

The word *que* is required. Don’t say *tengo trabajar*.

*Tener que* changes with the person who has the obligation, while the second verb stays in its infinitive form:

- *Ella tiene que estudiar.*: She has to study.
- *Ellos tienen que esperar.*: They have to wait.

This pattern is different from *tener ganas de*. Compare the two in one sentence:

*Tengo que limpiar la cocina, pero no tengo ganas de hacerlo.*: I have to clean the kitchen, but I don’t feel like doing it.

The first phrase expresses necessity. The second expresses your mood.

## More everyday phrases with tener

The same pattern appears in several other expressions.

| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| *tener prisa* | to be in a hurry | *Tengo prisa; el tren sale en diez minutos.*: I’m in a hurry; the train leaves in ten minutes. |
| *tener razón* | to be right | *Creo que tienes razón.*: I think you’re right. |
| *tener suerte* | to be lucky | *Tenemos suerte con el tiempo.*: We’re lucky with the weather. |
| *tener cuidado* | to be careful | *Ten cuidado al cruzar.*: Be careful when crossing. |
| *tener paciencia* | to be patient | *Hay que tener paciencia.*: You have to be patient. |
| *tener tiempo* | to have time | *No tengo tiempo esta mañana.*: I don’t have time this morning. |
| *tener interés en* | to be interested in | *Tiene interés en la historia.*: She is interested in history. |
| *tener éxito* | to be successful | *El proyecto tuvo éxito.*: The project was successful. |

*Tener cuidado* often appears as a command. Spanish uses *ten* for an informal command to one person:

*¡Ten cuidado!*: Be careful!

For more than one person in much of Latin America, you can say:

*¡Tengan cuidado!*: Be careful!

## How to say your age with tener

Spanish uses *tener* rather than “to be” when talking about age:

- *Tengo veinte años.*: I am twenty years old.
- *Mi hermana tiene treinta años.*: My sister is thirty years old.
- *¿Cuántos años tienes?*: How old are you?

A direct translation such as *soy veinte años* is incorrect. Think of the Spanish structure as “I have twenty years,” even though you should translate it naturally as “I am twenty years old.”

You normally include *años* after the number. It may be left out in casual conversation when the meaning is obvious, but learners should use the full pattern.

## A mini conversation using tener

Several expressions can appear in one ordinary conversation:

**A:** *¿Tienes hambre?*
Are you hungry?

**B:** *Sí, y también tengo mucha sed.*
Yes, and I’m also very thirsty.

**A:** *Podemos ir al restaurante nuevo.*
We can go to the new restaurant.

**B:** *Tengo ganas de probarlo, pero tengo que terminar este trabajo primero.*
I feel like trying it, but I have to finish this work first.

**A:** *Está bien, pero date prisa. Tengo sueño.*
All right, but hurry up. I’m sleepy.

This short scene covers physical needs, desire, obligation, and an everyday situation. It also gives each expression context instead of presenting it in an isolated list.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Using estar instead of tener

Don’t copy the English structure when Spanish uses *tener*.

- Incorrect: *Estoy hambre.*
- Correct: *Tengo hambre.*: I’m hungry.

### Forgetting a connecting word

Some expressions need *que*, *de*, or another preposition:

- *tener que + infinitive*: *Tengo que estudiar.*
- *tener ganas de + infinitive*: *Tengo ganas de estudiar.*
- *tener miedo de + infinitive*: *Tengo miedo de preguntar.*

These short words change the meaning, so learn the whole expression as one unit.

### Matching tener to the wrong person

The form of *tener* must agree with the subject:

- *Yo tengo frío.*: I’m cold.
- *Ella tiene frío.*: She’s cold.
- *Nosotros tenemos frío.*: We’re cold.

Instead of memorizing only *tener hambre*, practice complete chunks such as *tengo hambre*, *¿tienes hambre?*, and *tenemos hambre*.

## Grouping tener expressions by purpose

Group the phrases by purpose rather than learning one long list:

- **Physical needs:** *tener hambre, sed, sueño, frío, calor*
- **Feelings and wishes:** *tener miedo, ganas de*
- **Daily situations:** *tener prisa, tiempo, cuidado*
- **Opinions and results:** *tener razón, suerte, éxito*
- **Obligations:** *tener que + infinitive*

Next, make one personal sentence with each group. Connecting each phrase to a situation in your own life can make the pattern easier to recall.

## Quick FAQ

### Does tener always mean “to have”?

No. Its basic meaning is “to have,” but many common expressions translate with “to be” or another English verb. For example, *tener sueño* means “to be sleepy,” and *tener razón* means “to be right.”

### How do you say “I am very hungry” in Spanish?

Say *Tengo mucha hambre.* The word *hambre* is a noun, so use *mucha*, not *muy*, directly before it.

### What is the difference between tengo sueño and estoy cansado?

*Tengo sueño* means “I’m sleepy” and suggests that you want to sleep. *Estoy cansado* or *estoy cansada* means “I’m tired,” which can describe physical or mental tiredness without sleepiness.

### Is it tener miedo a or tener miedo de?

Both forms are used. *Tener miedo a* is common before a noun, while *tener miedo de* is common before a noun or infinitive. You may hear regional differences, so focus first on recognizing both.

### Can I say tener ganas without de?

Yes, when you don’t name the desired action or thing. For example, *No tengo ganas* means “I don’t feel like it.” If you add an action, use *de*: *No tengo ganas de salir* (“I don’t feel like going out”).

## Start with the phrases you need today

You don’t need to memorize every expression at once. Begin with *tengo hambre*, *tengo sueño*, *tengo ganas de*, *tengo miedo de*, and *tengo que* because they fit many everyday situations.

Make five true sentences about your day, change the subject, and turn two of them into questions. This gives you practice with both the expressions and the different forms of *tener*.

Spanish expressions with tener you’ll actually use

Spanish reflexive verbs use a small pronoun such as _me_, _te_, or _se_. They follow a consistent pattern, and many describe familiar actions like getting up, washing, dressing, or going to bed.

Review the complete [Spanish reflexive verbs lesson](https://espanido.com/rules/verbos-reflexivos), or [start the interactive exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/verbos-reflexivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-reflexive-verbs-guide) right away.

## What is a reflexive verb in Spanish?

A reflexive verb shows that the person doing an action also receives the action. In simple terms, someone does something to themselves.

Compare these two sentences:

- _Lavo el coche._: I wash the car.
- _Me lavo._: I wash myself.

In the first sentence, I act on the car. In the second, the action comes back to me. The word _me_ shows who receives it.

Spanish reflexive verbs appear in dictionaries with _-se_ at the end:

- _lavarse_: to wash oneself
- _vestirse_: to get dressed
- _sentarse_: to sit down
- _despertarse_: to wake up
- _acostarse_: to go to bed

The _-se_ changes when you use the verb in a sentence because it must match the person doing the action.

## The Spanish reflexive pronouns

Every subject has a matching reflexive pronoun.

| Subject | Reflexive pronoun | Example |
| ----------------------- | ----------------- | -------------------------------- |
| _yo_ | _me_ | _Me levanto._: I get up. |
| _tú_ | _te_ | _Te levantas._: You get up. |
| _él, ella, usted_ | _se_ | _Ella se levanta._: She gets up. |
| _nosotros/as_ | _nos_ | _Nos levantamos._: We get up. |
| _vosotros/as_ | _os_ | _Os levantáis._: You all get up. |
| _ellos, ellas, ustedes_ | _se_ | _Se levantan._: They get up. |

In most everyday sentences, the pronoun goes directly before a conjugated verb. A conjugated verb has been changed to match its subject, such as _levanto_ for “I get up.”

## How to conjugate a reflexive verb

Use this three-step method:

1. Remove _-se_ from the infinitive.
2. Conjugate the remaining verb for the subject.
3. Put the matching reflexive pronoun before the verb.

Take _ducharse_, meaning “to shower.” First, remove _-se_ to get _duchar_. Then conjugate _duchar_ and add the correct pronoun.

| Subject | Conjugation | Translation |
| --------------------- | -------------- | ---------------------- |
| _yo_ | _me ducho_ | I shower |
| _tú_ | _te duchas_ | you shower |
| _él/ella/usted_ | _se ducha_ | he, she, or you shower |
| _nosotros/as_ | _nos duchamos_ | we shower |
| _vosotros/as_ | _os ducháis_ | you all shower |
| _ellos/ellas/ustedes_ | _se duchan_ | they or you all shower |

Although the pronoun changes, the verb still follows its usual conjugation pattern. An irregular verb therefore remains irregular when it's reflexive.

For example, _vestirse_ follows the same stem change as _vestir_:

- _Me visto rápido._: I get dressed quickly.
- _Te vistes antes del desayuno._: You get dressed before breakfast.
- _Se viste de negro._: He or she dresses in black.

## Common reflexive verbs for daily routines

Daily routines provide many examples of common reflexive verbs in Spanish.

| Spanish verb | Meaning | Example |
| ------------- | ------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| _despertarse_ | to wake up | _Me despierto a las siete._: I wake up at seven. |
| _levantarse_ | to get up | _Nos levantamos temprano._: We get up early. |
| _ducharse_ | to shower | _Ana se ducha por la mañana._: Ana showers in the morning. |
| _lavarse_ | to wash oneself | _Te lavas las manos._: You wash your hands. |
| _vestirse_ | to get dressed | _Los niños se visten solos._: The children get dressed by themselves. |
| _peinarse_ | to comb one’s hair | _Me peino antes de salir._: I comb my hair before leaving. |
| _acostarse_ | to go to bed | _¿A qué hora te acuestas?_: What time do you go to bed? |
| _dormirse_ | to fall asleep | _Se duerme en el sofá._: He or she falls asleep on the sofa. |

Consider Marta’s morning: _Marta se despierta, se levanta, se ducha y se viste._ This means “Marta wakes up, gets up, showers, and gets dressed.” The same pronoun appears before each verb because Marta is doing each action to or for herself.

You can review more patterns in Espanido’s [Spanish reflexive verbs lesson](https://espanido.com/rules/verbos-reflexivos).

## Where to put the reflexive pronoun

The pronoun usually comes before a conjugated verb:

- _Me levanto a las ocho._: I get up at eight.
- _Carlos se afeita cada mañana._: Carlos shaves every morning.
- _Nos acostamos tarde._: We go to bed late.

Infinitives, gerunds, and commands follow different placement rules.

### With an infinitive

When a conjugated verb is followed by an infinitive, you have two correct choices. The pronoun can go before the conjugated verb or attach to the infinitive.

- _Me quiero acostar._: I want to go to bed.
- _Quiero acostarme._: I want to go to bed.

Both sentences mean the same thing. Just make sure the pronoun matches the subject: _Quiero acostarme_, not _Quiero acostarse_, because the subject is _yo_.

### With a gerund

A gerund is the _-ando_ or _-iendo_ form used for an action in progress. Here too, the pronoun can go before the conjugated verb or attach to the gerund.

- _Me estoy vistiendo._: I am getting dressed.
- _Estoy vistiéndome._: I am getting dressed.

When you attach the pronoun, you'll often need a written accent to keep the original stress.

### With commands

Attach the pronoun to the end of an affirmative command:

- _¡Levántate!_: Get up!
- _¡Siéntese, por favor!_: Sit down, please!
- _¡Prepárense!_: Get ready!

With a negative command, put the pronoun before the verb:

- _¡No te levantes!_: Don’t get up!
- _¡No se preocupe!_: Don’t worry!
- _¡No os vayáis!_: Don’t leave!

## Body parts usually use an article

English speakers may use a possessive word such as “my” or “your” with body parts. Spanish normally uses _el_, _la_, _los_, or _las_ because the reflexive pronoun already shows whose body part it is.

- _Me lavo las manos._: I wash my hands.
- _Se cepilla los dientes._: She brushes her teeth.
- _Te peinas el pelo._: You comb your hair.

Avoid sentences such as _Me lavo mis manos_ in normal situations. It sounds repetitive because _me_ already tells us that they are my hands.

The same pattern appears with clothes and personal items in some contexts:

- _Me pongo la chaqueta._: I put on my jacket.
- _Se quita los zapatos._: He takes off his shoes.

## Not every verb ending in -se means “oneself”

Many introductory examples involve actions done to the body, but _-se_ has other uses too. Some verbs change meaning when they become pronominal, meaning they're used with a pronoun such as _me_, _te_, or _se_.

Compare these pairs:

| Without _-se_ | With _-se_ |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| _ir_: to go | _irse_: to leave or go away |
| _dormir_: to sleep | _dormirse_: to fall asleep |
| _llamar_: to call | _llamarse_: to be named |
| _quedar_: to remain or arrange to meet | _quedarse_: to stay |
| _poner_: to put | _ponerse_: to put on or become |

For example:

- _Voy al mercado._: I’m going to the market.
- _Me voy del mercado._: I’m leaving the market.

Learn these forms as complete verbs. Instead of memorizing only _ir_, learn _irse_ with a short example such as _Me voy a casa_: “I’m going home.”

## Reflexive or reciprocal?

A plural pronoun can sometimes mean “each other” rather than “ourselves” or “themselves.” This is called a reciprocal use.

- _Nos miramos._: We look at ourselves, or we look at each other.
- _Ellos se ayudan._: They help themselves, or they help each other.

Context usually makes the meaning clear. To stress “each other,” you can add _el uno al otro_ or _mutuamente_.

- _Los amigos se ayudan mutuamente._: The friends help each other.
- _Nos escribimos el uno al otro._: We write to each other.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Forgetting the reflexive pronoun

Incorrect: _Yo levanto a las siete._

Correct: _Yo me levanto a las siete._: I get up at seven.

Without _me_, _levanto_ normally means “I lift” or “I raise” something. The pronoun is an essential part of _levantarse_.

### Using the wrong pronoun

Incorrect: _Yo se ducho._

Correct: _Yo me ducho._: I shower.

Match the pronoun to the subject, not to the verb ending you see in the dictionary.

### Leaving the verb in the infinitive

Incorrect: _Ella se vestir por la mañana._

Correct: _Ella se viste por la mañana._: She gets dressed in the morning.

Both the pronoun and the verb need to match the subject.

### Making every personal action reflexive

Not every action involving a person needs a reflexive pronoun.

- _Como el desayuno._: I eat breakfast.
- _Tengo una clase._: I have a class.
- _Camino al trabajo._: I walk to work.

Learn verbs with their usual pattern. If a dictionary lists a verb with _-se_, keep that _-se_ when you memorize it.

## A simple way to practice

Choose one part of your day and write five short sentences about it. For example:

1. _Me despierto a las siete._: I wake up at seven.
2. _Me levanto cinco minutos después._: I get up five minutes later.
3. _Me ducho._: I shower.
4. _Me visto rápidamente._: I get dressed quickly.
5. _Me voy de casa a las ocho._: I leave home at eight.

Next, change the subject from _yo_ to _nosotros_. The pronouns and verb endings must change: _Nos despertamos, nos levantamos, nos duchamos, nos vestimos y nos vamos._

You can also use Espanido’s [reflexive verb practice exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/verbos-reflexivos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-reflexive-verbs-guide) to practice matching each subject with the correct pronoun.

## Quick checklist

Before finishing a sentence with a reflexive verb, check the following:

- Is the verb normally used with _-se_ in this meaning?
- Who is doing the action?
- Does the reflexive pronoun match that person?
- Is the main verb conjugated correctly?
- Is the pronoun in the right position?
- Am I using an article rather than a possessive word with a body part?

With repeated practice, forms such as _me levanto_, _te vistes_, and _se acuestan_ become easier to recognize and use.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the six Spanish reflexive pronouns?

They are _me, te, se, nos, os,_ and _se_. The pronoun must match the subject of the verb.

### Does a reflexive pronoun always go before the verb?

It goes before most conjugated verbs. It can attach to an infinitive or gerund, and it attaches to affirmative commands. With negative commands, it goes before the verb.

### Why do some Spanish verbs have -se?

Sometimes _-se_ shows that someone acts on themselves, as in _lavarse_. In other cases, it creates a distinct meaning, as in _ir_ “to go” and _irse_ “to leave.”

### Can a reflexive verb be used without the pronoun?

Sometimes the non-reflexive form exists, but its meaning or sentence structure may change. For example, _despertar al niño_ means “to wake the child,” while _despertarse_ means “to wake up.”

### What is the best way to learn Spanish reflexive verbs?

One practical method is to learn each verb with its pronoun and a short sentence rather than memorizing an isolated translation. Daily routine sentences and focused exercises provide repeated practice with the pattern.

How to use Spanish reflexive verbs correctly

You see **el**, **la**, **un**, and **una** everywhere in Spanish: *el libro*, *la casa*, *un café*, *una pregunta*. These small words are Spanish articles, and learning how they work will make your sentences sound much more natural.

Want to practice right away? [Start the articulos definidos e indefinidos exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/articulos-definidos-e-indefinidos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-articles-el-la-un-una).

![Spanish articles el, la, un and una shown with simple noun illustrations](/assets/blog/spanish-articles-el-la-un-una/og-image.png)

The basic choice is simple. Use **el** or **la** when you mean “the,” and use **un** or **una** when you mean “a” or “an.” You also need to match the article to the noun’s gender.

## The quick answer

Here is the main pattern for singular nouns:

| Article | Meaning | Used with | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| **el** | the | masculine nouns | *el libro* — the book |
| **la** | the | feminine nouns | *la mesa* — the table |
| **un** | a or an | masculine nouns | *un libro* — a book |
| **una** | a or an | feminine nouns | *una mesa* — a table |

Compare these two short conversations:

- *Necesito un bolígrafo.* — I need a pen.
- *Aquí está el bolígrafo.* — Here is the pen.

In the first sentence, the speaker needs a pen, but not a particular one. In the second, both people know which pen they mean.

That difference—general or unidentified versus specific or known—is the key to choosing the right Spanish article.

## When to use el and la

**El** and **la** are definite articles. A definite article points to a specific person, place, thing, or idea. In English, both words usually mean “the.”

Use **el** with a singular masculine noun:

- *el coche* — the car
- *el teléfono* — the phone
- *el problema* — the problem

Use **la** with a singular feminine noun:

- *la puerta* — the door
- *la ciudad* — the city
- *la noche* — the night

### When the noun is already known

Imagine that you are in a café. You order *un café* because you are introducing it into the conversation. A few minutes later, you can say:

- *El café está frío.* — The coffee is cold.

You now use **el** because it refers to the particular coffee you ordered.

The same pattern works in this example:

- *Compré una camisa. La camisa es azul.* — I bought a shirt. The shirt is blue.

First it is one unknown shirt. After you mention it, it becomes the specific shirt in the conversation.

### When there is only one clear thing

Use **el** or **la** when the situation makes the meaning clear:

- *Cierra la puerta.* — Close the door.
- *El sol está brillante.* — The sun is bright.
- *Voy al banco.* — I’m going to the bank.

The speaker expects the listener to understand which door, sun, or bank is meant.

### When talking about things in general

Spanish often uses **el**, **la**, **los**, or **las** for a whole category. English may use no article in the same sentence.

- *Me gusta el chocolate.* — I like chocolate.
- *La música es importante para mí.* — Music is important to me.
- *Los perros son animales sociales.* — Dogs are social animals.

A common beginner mistake is to translate directly from English and say *Me gusta chocolate*. In standard Spanish, *Me gusta el chocolate* is the natural choice when talking about chocolate in general.

## When to use un and una

**Un** and **una** are indefinite articles. They usually mean “a” or “an,” and they introduce someone or something that is not yet specific.

Use **un** with a singular masculine noun:

- *un amigo* — a friend
- *un hotel* — a hotel
- *un día* — a day

Use **una** with a singular feminine noun:

- *una amiga* — a friend
- *una habitación* — a room
- *una idea* — an idea

### When mentioning something for the first time

Use an indefinite article when the listener does not yet know the person or thing:

- *Hay un gato en el jardín.* — There is a cat in the garden.
- *Tengo una pregunta.* — I have a question.
- *Buscamos un restaurante.* — We are looking for a restaurant.

The cat, question, and restaurant are new information.

### When any member of a group will work

Use **un** or **una** when you do not have one specific thing in mind:

- *Quiero comprar un diccionario.* — I want to buy a dictionary.
- *Necesitamos una mesa para cuatro.* — We need a table for four.
- *¿Tienes un lápiz?* — Do you have a pencil?

The speaker wants one dictionary, table, or pencil, but has not identified a particular one.

### When describing one person or thing

An indefinite article can place a person or object in a group:

- *Madrid es una ciudad grande.* — Madrid is a large city.
- *Es un libro interesante.* — It is an interesting book.
- *Marta es una persona amable.* — Marta is a kind person.

Notice that the article agrees with the noun, not with the person being discussed. *Persona* is feminine, so you say *una persona* even when talking about a man.

## How to know whether a noun is masculine or feminine

Spanish nouns have grammatical gender. This does not always refer to natural gender; it is simply part of how the noun works.

Many nouns ending in **-o** are masculine, while many nouns ending in **-a** are feminine:

- *el libro* — the book
- *un zapato* — a shoe
- *la ventana* — the window
- *una silla* — a chair

This is a helpful pattern, but it is not a perfect rule. For example:

- *el problema* — the problem
- *el mapa* — the map
- *la mano* — the hand
- *la foto* — the photo

It is best to learn each new noun with its article. Instead of memorizing only *mano*, learn *la mano*. Instead of learning only *problema*, learn *el problema*.

If noun gender still feels uncertain, review Espanido’s guide and activities for [the gender of Spanish nouns](https://espanido.com/rules/genero-de-los-sustantivos). It will help you see the common endings and the most useful exceptions.

## What happens with plural nouns?

The plural forms follow the same idea:

| Singular | Plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| **el** | **los** | the |
| **la** | **las** | the |
| **un** | **unos** | some or a few |
| **una** | **unas** | some or a few |

Examples:

- *el libro → los libros* — the book → the books
- *la casa → las casas* — the house → the houses
- *un amigo → unos amigos* — a friend → some friends
- *una pregunta → unas preguntas* — a question → some questions

**Unos** and **unas** often mean “some” or “a few” rather than simply marking a plural:

- *Compré unos tomates.* — I bought some tomatoes.
- *Necesito unas cajas.* — I need a few boxes.

The article and noun must both match. You cannot say *la libros* or *un casas*. Use *los libros* and *unas casas*.

You can reinforce this pattern with Espanido’s [Spanish article rules and examples](https://espanido.com/rules/articulos-definidos-e-indefinidos).

## When Spanish leaves out the article

Spanish articles are common, but they are not used before every noun. A few situations are especially useful for beginners.

### Jobs after ser

Normally, do not use **un** or **una** before a profession after *ser*:

- *Soy profesora.* — I am a teacher.
- *Carlos es médico.* — Carlos is a doctor.
- *Mi hermana es ingeniera.* — My sister is an engineer.

However, the article can return when the profession has a description:

- *Es una profesora excelente.* — She is an excellent teacher.
- *Carlos es un médico muy conocido.* — Carlos is a very well-known doctor.

### Languages after hablar, estudiar and saber

Articles are often left out after verbs such as *hablar*, *estudiar*, and *saber*:

- *Hablo español.* — I speak Spanish.
- *Estudiamos francés.* — We study French.
- *Ana sabe italiano.* — Ana knows Italian.

But the article can appear when the language is the subject or when you describe it:

- *El español es bonito.* — Spanish is beautiful.
- *El francés que habla Ana es muy claro.* — The French that Ana speaks is very clear.

### After hay

Use an indefinite article after **hay** when talking about one non-specific item:

- *Hay un supermercado cerca.* — There is a supermarket nearby.
- *Hay una carta para ti.* — There is a letter for you.

Do not normally use **el** or **la** directly after *hay*. The purpose of *hay* is often to introduce something, not point to a known item.

## Special cases that confuse beginners

A few forms may look strange at first, but the patterns are manageable.

### El agua, not la agua

Some feminine nouns beginning with a stressed **a** sound use **el** in the singular because it is easier to pronounce:

- *el agua fría* — the cold water
- *el águila blanca* — the white eagle
- *el aula grande* — the large classroom

These nouns are still feminine. That is why the adjective is feminine: *fría*, *blanca*, and *grande* where gender is not visible. In the plural, use **las**: *las aguas*, *las águilas*, and *las aulas*.

The same pronunciation pattern affects **una**, which may become **un**: *un águila*. In everyday usage, you may hear some variation, but *un águila* is the standard form.

### Al and del

When **a** comes before **el**, they combine to form **al**:

- *Voy al mercado.* — I’m going to the market.

When **de** comes before **el**, they combine to form **del**:

- *Vengo del mercado.* — I’m coming from the market.

Do not combine these words with **la**:

- *Voy a la tienda.* — I’m going to the shop.
- *Vengo de la tienda.* — I’m coming from the shop.

## Common mistakes and quick fixes

### Mistake: matching the article to the speaker

Incorrect: *Soy una estudiante* only because the speaker is female, without checking the noun.

Better rule: match the article to the noun. Here, *estudiante* can refer to any gender, and the surrounding words or context show who is meant. With professions after *ser*, the most natural basic sentence is often *Soy estudiante*—“I am a student.”

### Mistake: assuming every -a noun is feminine

Incorrect: *la problema*

Correct: *el problema* — the problem

Learn frequent exceptions as complete pairs. Saying *el problema* several times is more useful than memorizing a long list of grammar labels.

### Mistake: dropping articles in general statements

Less natural: *Perros son inteligentes.*

Correct: *Los perros son inteligentes.* — Dogs are intelligent.

Spanish usually uses a definite article when discussing a complete category.

### Mistake: using el for every English “the”

English has one word, “the,” but Spanish articles must match the noun:

- *el hotel* — the hotel
- *la playa* — the beach
- *los hoteles* — the hotels
- *las playas* — the beaches

Before choosing an article, ask two questions: Is the noun specific or non-specific? Is it masculine or feminine?

## A simple three-step method

When you need an article, use this quick check:

1. **Is the noun specific or already known?** Choose *el*, *la*, *los*, or *las*.
2. **Is it one non-specific or newly introduced thing?** Choose *un* or *una*.
3. **What is the noun’s gender and number?** Make the article match.

Try it with this mini story:

- *Veo un perro.* — I see a dog.
- *El perro lleva una pelota.* — The dog is carrying a ball.
- *La pelota es roja.* — The ball is red.

The dog and ball first appear with indefinite articles. Once they are known, the story changes to definite articles.

## Practice Spanish articles

Reading the rule helps, but choosing articles in real sentences makes the pattern stick. Complete Espanido’s [el, la, un and una practice exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/articulos-definidos-e-indefinidos/exercise?utm_content=spanish-articles-el-la-un-una) and pay attention to why each noun is specific, non-specific, masculine, or feminine.

Do not worry if you need to check the noun’s gender at first. With regular practice, pairs such as *el libro*, *la casa*, *un problema*, and *una mano* will begin to sound automatic.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between el and un?

**El** means “the” and points to a specific masculine noun. **Un** means “a” or “an” and introduces a non-specific masculine noun: *el coche* is “the car,” while *un coche* is “a car.”

### What is the difference between la and una?

**La** means “the” for a feminine singular noun. **Una** means “a” or “an”: *la casa* is “the house,” while *una casa* is “a house.”

### Is el masculine and la feminine?

Usually, yes. **El** goes with masculine singular nouns, and **la** goes with feminine singular nouns. A small group of feminine nouns, such as *agua*, uses **el** in the singular for pronunciation: *el agua fría*.

### Do Spanish articles always match the noun?

Yes. The article matches the noun’s grammatical gender and number. For example, use *la mesa*, *las mesas*, *el libro*, and *los libros*.

### Why does Spanish use articles more often than English?

Spanish commonly uses definite articles for general ideas and categories. English says “I like music,” while Spanish usually says *Me gusta la música*—literally, “I like the music.”

## The main point to remember

Use **el** and **la** for a specific or known noun. Use **un** and **una** when introducing one non-specific noun. Then make sure the article matches the noun’s gender.

Start by learning nouns together with their articles, such as *el día*, *la mano*, *un problema*, and *una ciudad*. This small habit will help you choose Spanish articles faster and speak with more confidence.

Spanish articles: when to use el, la, un and una

Both **ser** and **estar** mean “to be,” but Spanish uses them for different kinds of information. The best way to choose correctly is to ask what you are describing: identity, a state, a location, or an event.

Want to practice right away? [Start the verbo ser y estar exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/verbo-ser-y-estar/exercise?utm_content=ser-vs-estar-guide).

![Ser vs estar explained with identity, state, and location](/assets/blog/when-to-use-ser-and-estar-in-spanish-correctly/og-image.png)

## The short answer: ser describes what something is

Use **ser** to identify, define, or classify someone or something. Use **estar** to talk about a condition, location, result, or action in progress.

Compare these examples:

- **Ana es tranquila.** — Ana is a calm person.
- **Ana está tranquila.** — Ana is calm right now.

The English translation is almost the same, but the Spanish meaning changes. The first sentence describes Ana’s character. The second describes her current state.

A useful starting point is:

- **Ser** answers questions such as “What is it?” or “What is this person like?”
- **Estar** answers questions such as “How is it now?” or “Where is it?”

This is more reliable than the common “permanent versus temporary” rule. That shortcut can help at first, but it does not explain every case.

## Present tense forms of ser and estar

Here are the present tense forms you will use most often:

| Subject | Ser | Estar |
|---|---|---|
| yo | soy | estoy |
| tú | eres | estás |
| él, ella, usted | es | está |
| nosotros/as | somos | estamos |
| vosotros/as | sois | estáis |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | son | están |

Notice the written accents in **estás**, **está**, and **están**. These accents are part of the correct spelling.

If the forms are still new, review the [ser and estar rules on Espanido](https://espanido.com/rules/verbo-ser-y-estar) before trying the examples below.

## When to use ser

### Identity and classification

Use **ser** to say who or what someone or something is. This includes names, jobs, roles, and categories.

- **Soy Elena.** — I am Elena.
- **Pablo es médico.** — Pablo is a doctor.
- **Esto es un problema.** — This is a problem.
- **Los gatos son animales.** — Cats are animals.

Spanish often leaves out the article before a profession. For example, say **Es profesora**, not normally **Es una profesora**, when you are simply naming someone’s profession.

### Origin and nationality

Use **ser** to say where someone or something comes from.

- **Somos de Canadá.** — We are from Canada.
- **Lucía es española.** — Lucía is Spanish.
- **El café es de Colombia.** — The coffee is from Colombia.

A person may move to another country, but this information still uses **ser** because it describes origin, not current location.

### General characteristics

Use **ser** for qualities that describe the person or thing itself.

- **Mi hermano es alto.** — My brother is tall.
- **La película es interesante.** — The movie is interesting.
- **Estas calles son estrechas.** — These streets are narrow.

These qualities do not need to last forever. A child can grow taller, and opinions about a movie can change. The point is that you are describing a characteristic, not a current condition.

### Time and dates

Clock time, days, and dates use **ser**.

- **Es la una.** — It is one o’clock.
- **Son las ocho.** — It is eight o’clock.
- **Hoy es lunes.** — Today is Monday.
- **Mañana es el 12 de mayo.** — Tomorrow is May 12.

Use singular **es** for one o’clock and plural **son** for other times.

### Relationships, ownership, and material

Use **ser** to describe relationships and to say what something belongs to or is made from.

- **Clara es mi prima.** — Clara is my cousin.
- **El libro es de Mateo.** — The book belongs to Mateo.
- **La mesa es de madera.** — The table is made of wood.

The phrase **ser de** can therefore express origin, ownership, or material. The surrounding words make the meaning clear.

### The location of an event

Events use **ser** when you say where they take place.

- **La reunión es en la oficina.** — The meeting is in the office.
- **El concierto es en el parque.** — The concert is in the park.
- **La fiesta es en mi casa.** — The party is at my house.

This is an important exception to the usual location rule. People and objects are located with **estar**, but events are held with **ser**.

## When to use estar

### The location of people and things

Use **estar** to say where a person, object, or place is located.

- **Marta está en casa.** — Marta is at home.
- **Las llaves están en la mesa.** — The keys are on the table.
- **Madrid está en España.** — Madrid is in Spain.

Madrid’s location is not temporary, but Spanish still uses **estar**. This is one reason the “temporary versus permanent” rule is not enough.

Compare the event exception:

- **El museo está en el centro.** — The museum is downtown.
- **La exposición es en el museo.** — The exhibition is at the museum.

The museum is a place, so its location uses **estar**. The exhibition is an event, so its location uses **ser**.

### Feelings and conditions

Use **estar** for emotions, health, appearance, and other states.

- **Estoy cansado.** — I am tired.
- **Estamos felices.** — We are happy.
- **La sopa está fría.** — The soup is cold.
- **¿Cómo estás?** — How are you?

These sentences describe how someone or something is at that moment. The state may change, but change is not required for **estar** to be correct.

### Results of an action

Use **estar** when something is in a state caused by an earlier action.

- **La puerta está cerrada.** — The door is closed.
- **El vaso está roto.** — The glass is broken.
- **La cena está preparada.** — Dinner is prepared.

Someone closed the door, broke the glass, or prepared dinner. The sentence focuses on the resulting state, not the action itself.

### Actions happening now

Use **estar** with a gerund to describe an action in progress. A gerund is the Spanish **-ando** or **-iendo** form, similar to an English verb ending in “-ing.”

- **Estoy estudiando.** — I am studying.
- **Estamos comiendo.** — We are eating.
- **Los niños están jugando.** — The children are playing.

This structure is called the present progressive. Use it when you want to stress that the action is happening around the present moment.

## Adjectives that change meaning with ser and estar

Some adjectives can follow either verb, but the choice changes the message. These pairs are worth learning as complete examples.

| With ser | Meaning | With estar | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Es aburrido.** | He or it is boring. | **Está aburrido.** | He is bored. |
| **Es listo.** | He is clever. | **Está listo.** | He or it is ready. |
| **Es rico.** | He is rich. | **Está rico.** | It tastes delicious. |
| **Es seguro.** | It is safe or reliable. | **Está seguro.** | He is certain. |
| **Es verde.** | It is green in color. | **Está verde.** | It is unripe. |

Imagine a friend waiting for dinner. **Carlos es aburrido** means Carlos is a boring person. **Carlos está aburrido** means he needs something interesting to do.

The verb does more than mark time. It tells the listener whether the adjective describes a defining quality or a current state or reaction.

## Why “permanent versus temporary” causes mistakes

Many learners are taught that **ser** is permanent and **estar** is temporary. It works for examples such as **Soy inglés** and **Estoy cansado**, but it quickly creates problems.

Consider these sentences:

- **Madrid está en España.** — Madrid is in Spain.
- **Está muerto.** — He is dead.
- **La fiesta es mañana.** — The party is tomorrow.

Madrid’s location and death are not temporary, yet both sentences use **estar**. A party may last only two hours, yet its date uses **ser**.

Instead of asking how long something lasts, ask what kind of information you are giving. Identity and definition normally use **ser**, while location and condition normally use **estar**.

## A quick decision guide

When you need to choose between **ser** and **estar**, follow these steps:

1. **Is it an action happening now?** Use **estar** plus a gerund: **Estoy leyendo**.
2. **Is it the location of a person or thing?** Use **estar**: **El banco está aquí**.
3. **Is it the location of an event?** Use **ser**: **La boda es aquí**.
4. **Is it identity, origin, time, material, or a relationship?** Use **ser**.
5. **Is it a feeling, condition, appearance, or result?** Use **estar**.
6. **Is there an adjective?** Ask whether it describes a general quality or the current state.

You do not need to process every rule during a real conversation. With repeated practice, common combinations such as **estar cansado**, **ser de México**, and **ser las tres** begin to feel automatic.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Using ser for physical location

Incorrect: **Mi teléfono es en la cocina.**
Correct: **Mi teléfono está en la cocina.** — My phone is in the kitchen.

A phone is an object, so its location takes **estar**.

### Using estar for professions

Incorrect: **Estoy estudiante.**
Correct: **Soy estudiante.** — I am a student.

Being a student is a role or classification. If you want to describe a temporary activity, say **Estoy estudiando** — “I am studying.”

### Using estar for an event’s location

Incorrect: **El partido está en el estadio.**
Correct: **El partido es en el estadio.** — The game is at the stadium.

The game is an event. However, **El estadio está cerca** is correct because it describes where the stadium is.

### Forgetting adjective agreement

Adjectives often change to match the gender and number of the noun they describe.

- **Ella está cansada.** — She is tired.
- **Ellos están cansados.** — They are tired.
- **Las habitaciones son pequeñas.** — The rooms are small.

Choosing the right verb is only one part of the sentence. Check the adjective ending too.

## Test yourself

Choose the correct form of **ser** or **estar**.

1. Mi madre ___ profesora.
2. Nosotros ___ en el aeropuerto.
3. La comida ___ muy buena hoy.
4. El examen ___ el viernes.
5. Yo ___ aprendiendo español.
6. La conferencia ___ en el Hotel Central.

### Answers

1. **es** — A profession uses **ser**.
2. **estamos** — The location of people uses **estar**.
3. **está** — This describes how the food tastes today.
4. **es** — Dates and scheduled times use **ser**.
5. **estoy** — An action in progress uses **estar** plus a gerund.
6. **es** — The conference is an event.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is ser always permanent?

No. **Ser** is used for time, dates, events, identity, and classification, even when the information is temporary. For example, **La reunión es hoy** means “The meeting is today.”

### Is estar always temporary?

No. Locations use **estar**, even when they do not change. **Barcelona está en España** is the normal and correct form.

### Do emotions always use estar?

Current emotional states normally use **estar**: **Estoy nervioso** means “I am nervous.” With **ser**, an adjective may describe someone’s usual personality, as in **Es alegre** — “She is cheerful.”

### Why does Spanish have two verbs for “to be”?

Spanish separates different kinds of descriptions that English expresses with one verb. **Ser** often identifies what something is, while **estar** presents its state or location.

### What is the fastest way to remember ser vs estar?

Learn short sentences rather than isolated rules. Practice pairs such as **Es listo** and **Está listo**, then use them in new situations. The contrast makes the difference easier to remember.

## The key idea to remember

Do not depend only on whether something is permanent or temporary. Use **ser** mainly for identity, definition, origin, characteristics, time, relationships, and events; use **estar** mainly for states, locations, results, and actions in progress.

When you make a mistake, compare your sentence with a correct example and try again. Each contrast you practice makes the difference between **ser** and **estar** clearer.

When to use ser and estar in Spanish correctly

Choosing between the preterite and imperfect can feel like guessing at first. The key is not simply when something happened, but how you want the listener to see the past event: as a completed action or as part of an ongoing scene.

Want to practice right away? [Start the preterito indefinido exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido/exercise?utm_content=how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish).

![How to choose preterite or imperfect in Spanish](/assets/blog/how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish/og-image.png)

Both tenses talk about the past, and they often appear together. Once you learn the main contrast, you can stop memorizing long lists and start making choices based on the story you want to tell.

## The short answer

Use the **preterite** for a completed past action that moves a story forward. Use the **imperfect** for background details, repeated habits, descriptions, and actions that were in progress.

Compare these examples:

- *Ayer compré un libro.* — “Yesterday I bought a book.”
- *Cuando era niño, compraba muchos libros.* — “When I was a child, I used to buy many books.”

In the first sentence, buying the book is one finished event. In the second, buying books was a repeated habit during an open period of childhood.

Here is the basic contrast:

| Choose the preterite for... | Choose the imperfect for... |
|---|---|
| A finished action | An action in progress |
| A specific event | A repeated past habit |
| The start or end of an action | Background information |
| A sequence of events | Descriptions, age, time, and weather |
| An interruption | The action being interrupted |

The preterite is also called the **pretérito indefinido** or **pretérito perfecto simple**. These names refer to the same tense in this article.

## Think of a story, not a calendar

English speakers often look for time words such as “yesterday” or “last year.” Those words can help, but they do not choose the tense by themselves.

Instead, imagine that you are directing a film. The imperfect sets the scene, while the preterite shows the main events.

- *Hacía frío y llovía.* — “It was cold, and it was raining.”
- *De repente, llegó Ana.* — “Suddenly, Ana arrived.”

The cold and rain form the background. Ana’s arrival is the new, completed event that moves the story forward.

A useful question is: **Am I showing the scene, or am I saying what happened next?** For a scene, the imperfect is often right. For the next event, the preterite is often right.

## When to use the preterite in Spanish

The Spanish preterite tense presents an action as complete. The action can be short or long; what matters is that you place boundaries around it.

### One completed event

Use the preterite when an action happened and finished.

- *Perdí mis llaves.* — “I lost my keys.”
- *Marta llamó a su madre.* — “Marta called her mother.”
- *Visitamos Sevilla el verano pasado.* — “We visited Seville last summer.”

Each sentence reports a complete event. The speaker is not showing the action as unfinished or ongoing.

### A clear number of times

Use the preterite when you say how many times something happened.

- *Leí el mensaje tres veces.* — “I read the message three times.”
- *Fuimos a Madrid dos veces.* — “We went to Madrid twice.”
- *Te llamé una vez.* — “I called you once.”

The number gives the action a clear limit.

### A sequence of finished actions

The preterite is common when telling what happened step by step.

- *Me levanté, preparé café y salí de casa.* — “I got up, made coffee, and left the house.”

These actions create the main path of the story. One event follows another.

### The beginning or end of something

Starting and finishing are natural boundaries, so verbs such as *empezar*, *comenzar*, *terminar* and *acabar* often appear in the preterite.

- *La película empezó a las ocho.* — “The movie started at eight.”
- *La clase terminó temprano.* — “The class ended early.”

To review the forms and try focused questions, see Espanido’s [Spanish preterite guide](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido) and [practice the preterite](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido/exercise?utm_content=how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish).

## Spanish preterite conjugation at a glance

Regular preterite endings follow two main patterns. Verbs ending in *-er* and *-ir* share the same endings.

| Person | hablar | comer | vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablé | comí | viví |
| tú | hablaste | comiste | viviste |
| él, ella, usted | habló | comió | vivió |
| nosotros/as | hablamos | comimos | vivimos |
| vosotros/as | hablasteis | comisteis | vivisteis |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | hablaron | comieron | vivieron |

Notice the written accents in forms such as *hablé*, *habló*, *comí* and *comió*. They are part of the correct spelling.

Some very common verbs are irregular. For example, *fui* can mean “I went” or “I was,” *tuve* means “I had,” and *hice* means “I did” or “I made.” Learn these forms through short sentences instead of trying to memorize every irregular verb at once.

## When to use the imperfect

The imperfect does not focus on a clear beginning or end. It shows what used to happen, what was happening, or what a past situation was like.

### Past habits and repeated actions

Use the imperfect for things that happened regularly.

- *De niño, jugaba al fútbol cada sábado.* — “As a child, I used to play soccer every Saturday.”
- *Siempre cenábamos juntos.* — “We always ate dinner together.”
- *Mi abuela me llamaba los domingos.* — “My grandmother used to call me on Sundays.”

English often uses “used to” or “would” for this meaning.

### Actions in progress

Use the imperfect when you enter the middle of a past action without focusing on its end.

- *Yo estudiaba en la biblioteca.* — “I was studying in the library.”
- *Los niños dormían.* — “The children were sleeping.”

You are looking at the action while it is unfolding.

### Descriptions and background details

The imperfect commonly describes people, places, feelings, time, age, and weather.

- *La casa era pequeña y tenía un jardín.* — “The house was small and had a garden.”
- *Eran las nueve.* — “It was nine o’clock.”
- *Lucía tenía quince años.* — “Lucía was fifteen years old.”
- *Hacía mucho calor.* — “It was very hot.”

These details create the setting instead of moving the story to its next event.

You can study the forms in Espanido’s [imperfect guide](https://espanido.com/rules/imperfecto-de-indicativo) and then [practice the imperfect](https://espanido.com/rules/imperfecto-de-indicativo/exercise?utm_content=how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish).

## When both tenses appear together

Many natural Spanish sentences need both tenses. A common pattern is:

**Imperfect action in progress + preterite interruption**

- *Caminaba al trabajo cuando empezó a llover.* — “I was walking to work when it started to rain.”
- *Dormíamos cuando sonó el teléfono.* — “We were sleeping when the phone rang.”
- *Ana cocinaba cuando llegó Luis.* — “Ana was cooking when Luis arrived.”

The imperfect answers “What was going on?” The preterite answers “What happened?”

Now look at a short story:

> *Era viernes y hacía buen tiempo. Marta caminaba por el centro cuando vio una cartera en el suelo. La recogió, buscó una identificación y llamó a la dueña. Una hora después, las dos se encontraron en una cafetería.*
>
> “It was Friday, and the weather was nice. Marta was walking downtown when she saw a wallet on the ground. She picked it up, looked for identification, and called the owner. An hour later, the two met in a café.”

*Era*, *hacía*, and *caminaba* set the scene. *Vio*, *recogió*, *buscó*, *llamó*, and *se encontraron* tell the chain of completed events.

## The same verb can change meaning

Sometimes the tense changes how a verb is understood. This is not a special rule to fear; it follows the same difference between an open situation and a completed event.

| Imperfect | Preterite |
|---|---|
| *Sabía la respuesta.* — “I knew the answer.” | *Supe la respuesta ayer.* — “I found out the answer yesterday.” |
| *Conocía a Elena.* — “I knew Elena.” | *Conocí a Elena en 2022.* — “I met Elena in 2022.” |
| *Podía abrir la puerta.* — “I was able to open the door.” | *Pude abrir la puerta.* — “I managed to open the door.” |
| *Quería salir.* — “I wanted to leave.” | *Quise salir.* — “I tried or decided to leave.” |

The imperfect describes an existing state. The preterite often points to a change, discovery, or completed attempt.

## A quick decision guide

When you need to choose a tense, ask these questions in order:

1. **Is it a completed event or one step in a story?** Use the preterite.
2. **Is it a habit that used to happen?** Use the imperfect.
3. **Is it background information or a description?** Use the imperfect.
4. **Was an action already in progress when another event happened?** Use the imperfect for the ongoing action and the preterite for the interruption.
5. **Am I focusing on a beginning, end, or specific number of times?** Use the preterite.

If both choices still seem possible, decide how you want to frame the action.

- *Viví en México durante cinco años.* — “I lived in Mexico for five years.”
- *Vivía en México cuando conocí a Pablo.* — “I was living in Mexico when I met Pablo.”

The first sentence presents the five-year period as complete. The second uses that period as background for meeting Pablo.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Choosing only from signal words

Words such as *ayer* and *de repente* often appear with the preterite. Words such as *siempre*, *a menudo*, and *de niño* often appear with the imperfect.

These are useful clues, not automatic rules. Meaning and context matter more than one word.

### Thinking long actions always need the imperfect

A long action can still be complete.

- *Trabajé allí durante veinte años.* — “I worked there for twenty years.”

Twenty years is long, but the speaker presents the period as finished. Duration alone does not decide the tense.

### Using the preterite for every past action

A story made only of preterite forms may report events but give no setting. Add the imperfect to show what people were doing, how they felt, and what the place was like.

### Translating English word by word

English simple past can match either Spanish tense. “I lived” could be *viví* if the period is complete or *vivía* if it is background information.

Choose the Spanish tense from the intended meaning, not only from the English verb form.

## How to practice the choice

Start with pairs of sentences rather than isolated conjugations. Ask why one sentence shows a finished event and the other shows a habit or background scene.

Next, write a five-sentence story. Use two imperfect verbs to set the scene and three preterite verbs for the main events. For example, describe the weather and what you were doing, then add an unexpected phone call or visitor.

Finally, use instant feedback to notice patterns. Alternate between the [preterite exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido/exercise?utm_content=how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish) and the [imperfect exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/imperfecto-de-indicativo/exercise?utm_content=how-to-choose-preterite-or-imperfect-in-spanish) on Espanido. After each answer, say your reason aloud: “completed event,” “past habit,” “background,” or “action in progress.”

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the preterite only for short actions?

No. It can describe an action that lasted a minute or many years. Use it when you present the action as a complete period or event.

### Is the imperfect always translated as “was doing”?

No. It can also mean “used to do,” and it is common for descriptions. *Tenía diez años* means “I was ten years old,” not “I was having ten years.”

### Can one sentence contain both tenses?

Yes, and this is very common. The imperfect often gives the background or ongoing action, while the preterite introduces a completed event.

### Are pretérito indefinido and preterite the same tense?

Yes. Spanish learning materials use several names, including *pretérito indefinido* and *pretérito perfecto simple*. In English, it is usually called the preterite.

### What is the easiest rule to remember?

Think **scene versus event**. Use the imperfect to show the scene and the preterite to tell what happened within it.

## The main idea to keep

Do not ask only, “Did this happen in the past?” Ask how the action fits into the story. A completed event usually takes the preterite, while a habit, description, or action in progress usually takes the imperfect.

You will not make every choice perfectly at first, and that is normal. With short stories and regular Espanido practice, the contrast will begin to feel natural.

How to choose preterite or imperfect in Spanish

You want to ask a simple question in Spanish, but three small words get in the way: _qué_, _cuál_ and _cómo_. They can all translate differently depending on the sentence, so the best way to learn them is through common question patterns rather than one-word translations.

Want to practice right away? [Start the preguntas exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/preguntas/exercise?utm_content=que-cual-como-guide).

![Qué, cuál and cómo shown in Spanish question bubbles](/assets/blog/spanish-questions-que-cual-como/og-image.png)

In this guide, you will learn the difference between _qué_ and _cuál_ in Spanish, when to use _cómo_, and how to avoid the mistakes English speakers often make. You will also find quick tables, real-life examples and links to [Spanish question practice](https://espanido.com/rules/preguntas/exercise?utm_content=que-cual-como-guide) on Espanido.

## The quick answer

Use **qué** to ask what something is, what something means or what kind of thing someone wants. It also comes directly before a noun.

- _¿Qué significa esta palabra?_ — What does this word mean?
- _¿Qué libro estás leyendo?_ — What book are you reading?
- _¿Qué quieres hacer?_ — What do you want to do?

Use **cuál** to ask which one or which ones. It often asks someone to identify an item, person or answer from a known or possible group.

- _¿Cuál prefieres?_ — Which one do you prefer?
- _¿Cuál es tu dirección?_ — What is your address?
- _¿Cuáles son tus zapatos?_ — Which ones are your shoes?

Use **cómo** to ask how something happens, how someone feels or what something is like.

- _¿Cómo estás?_ — How are you?
- _¿Cómo funciona?_ — How does it work?
- _¿Cómo es tu profesor?_ — What is your teacher like?

Here is the basic comparison:

| Question word | Main idea | Common pattern |
| ----------------- | ----------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| **qué** | what, what kind of | _qué + noun_ or _qué + verb_ |
| **cuál / cuáles** | which one or which ones | _cuál + verb_ |
| **cómo** | how or what…like | _cómo + verb_ |

These are helpful starting points, not mechanical translation rules. The sentence around the question word matters.

## When to use qué

### Use qué before a noun

When the question word comes directly before a noun, Spanish normally uses **qué**, not _cuál_.

- _¿Qué película quieres ver?_ — Which movie do you want to watch?
- _¿Qué camisa vas a comprar?_ — Which shirt are you going to buy?
- _¿Qué tren va al centro?_ — Which train goes downtown?
- _¿Qué idiomas hablas?_ — What languages do you speak?

Notice that English may use either _what_ or _which_. Spanish still uses _qué_ because the noun follows it directly: _qué película_, _qué camisa_ and _qué tren_.

A common English-speaking learner mistake is:

- Incorrect: _¿Cuál película quieres ver?_
- Standard Spanish: _¿Qué película quieres ver?_ — Which movie do you want to watch?

You may hear _cuál + noun_ in some regions, especially in parts of Latin America. However, _qué + noun_ is the safest pattern to use in standard Spanish.

### Use qué to ask for an explanation or definition

Use _qué_ when you want to know what something is, what it means or what someone is doing.

- _¿Qué es una tapa?_ — What is a tapa?
- _¿Qué significa barato?_ — What does _barato_ mean?
- _¿Qué haces?_ — What are you doing?
- _¿Qué pasó ayer?_ — What happened yesterday?

Imagine that you see the word _sobremesa_ for the first time. You are not choosing it from a list. You want its meaning, so you ask _¿Qué significa sobremesa?_

### Use qué in common preposition patterns

A preposition is a small word such as _de_, _con_ or _para_. Spanish often places one before _qué_.

- _¿De qué hablas?_ — What are you talking about?
- _¿Con qué escribes?_ — What are you writing with?
- _¿Para qué sirve esto?_ — What is this used for?
- _¿En qué piensas?_ — What are you thinking about?

Do not leave the preposition at the end as you often can in English. Spanish says _¿De qué hablas?_, literally, About what are you talking?

## When to use cuál

### Use cuál to identify one option

Use _cuál_ when the answer identifies one item, fact or option. The possible answers may be visible, already mentioned or simply understood from the situation.

- _Tengo dos chaquetas. ¿Cuál prefieres?_ — I have two jackets. Which one do you prefer?
- _¿Cuál quieres, el rojo o el azul?_ — Which one do you want, the red one or the blue one?
- _¿Cuál es la respuesta correcta?_ — Which is the correct answer?

The group does not always need to be small or clearly listed. For example, _¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono?_ asks the listener to identify their phone number, even though no list appears in the conversation.

### Use cuál with ser for personal information

Many questions about personal details follow **cuál + ser**. Although English uses _what_, Spanish often treats the answer as a specific identifying fact.

- _¿Cuál es tu nombre?_ — What is your name?
- _¿Cuál es tu dirección?_ — What is your address?
- _¿Cuál es tu correo electrónico?_ — What is your email address?
- _¿Cuál es tu comida favorita?_ — What is your favorite food?

This does not mean that _cuál_ must always appear before _ser_. Compare these two questions:

- _¿Qué es una paella?_ — What is paella?
- _¿Cuál es tu paella favorita?_ — Which is your favorite paella?

The first asks for a definition or explanation. The second asks you to identify a favorite.

### Use cuáles for plural answers

_Cuál_ changes to **cuáles** when you expect more than one answer or ask which ones.

- _¿Cuáles son tus libros?_ — Which ones are your books?
- _¿Cuáles prefieres?_ — Which ones do you prefer?
- _¿Cuáles son tus planes para el fin de semana?_ — What are your plans for the weekend?

There is no masculine or feminine form. Use _cuál_ for one answer and _cuáles_ for more than one.

## Qué vs cuál in Spanish

The difference between _qué_ and _cuál_ in Spanish becomes clearer when you compare similar questions.

| Spanish question | Meaning | Why? |
| ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------ |
| _¿Qué es eso?_ | What is that? | You want an explanation or definition. |
| _¿Cuál es el tuyo?_ | Which one is yours? | You want one item to be identified. |
| _¿Qué bebida quieres?_ | Which drink do you want? | _Qué_ comes directly before a noun. |
| _¿Cuál quieres?_ | Which one do you want? | The noun is understood and not repeated. |
| _¿Qué estudias?_ | What do you study? | You ask for general information. |
| _¿Cuál es tu asignatura favorita?_ | What is your favorite subject? | You ask for a specific identifying answer. |

A useful shortcut is:

- If a noun comes immediately after the question word, choose **qué**.
- If the question means _which one_ and the noun is understood, choose **cuál**.
- If you want a definition, choose **qué**.

Now look at a short café conversation:

- _¿Qué bebida quieres?_ — Which drink do you want?
- _No sé. ¿Cuál recomiendas?_ — I don’t know. Which one do you recommend?
- _El chocolate caliente._ — The hot chocolate.

The first question uses _qué_ before _bebida_. The second uses _cuál_ because _bebida_ is already understood.

## When to use cómo

### Use cómo to ask how

The most direct meaning of _cómo_ is **how**. Use it to ask about a method, process or condition.

- _¿Cómo llego a la estación?_ — How do I get to the station?
- _¿Cómo preparas esta sopa?_ — How do you make this soup?
- _¿Cómo aprendiste español?_ — How did you learn Spanish?
- _¿Cómo te sientes hoy?_ — How do you feel today?

If the expected answer explains a method, _cómo_ is usually the right choice.

### Use cómo to ask what someone or something is like

The pattern **¿Cómo es…?** asks for a description. English often uses _What is…like?_ instead of _How is…?_

- _¿Cómo es tu ciudad?_ — What is your city like?
- _¿Cómo es Ana?_ — What is Ana like?
- _¿Cómo era el hotel?_ — What was the hotel like?

An answer may describe appearance, personality or general qualities: _Es tranquila y bonita_ — It is quiet and pretty.

Compare that with _qué_:

- _¿Qué es un hostal?_ — What is a hostel?
- _¿Cómo es el hostal?_ — What is the hostel like?

The first asks for a definition. The second asks for a description of a particular hostel.

### Use cómo to ask someone to repeat something

If you did not hear or understand, you can say:

- _¿Cómo?_ — Sorry? / What?
- _¿Cómo dices?_ — What did you say?
- _¿Cómo se dice esto en español?_ — How do you say this in Spanish?

In a formal situation, _¿Cómo?_ is often softer than a direct _¿Qué?_ when asking someone to repeat themselves.

## Remember the written accents

Question words carry written accents: **qué**, **cuál**, **cuáles** and **cómo**. They keep these accents in both direct and indirect questions.

Direct questions use question marks:

- _¿Qué quieres comer?_ — What do you want to eat?
- _¿Cuál prefieres?_ — Which one do you prefer?

Indirect questions sit inside a larger sentence:

- _No sé qué quiere comer._ — I don’t know what he or she wants to eat.
- _Dime cuál prefieres._ — Tell me which one you prefer.
- _Quiero saber cómo funciona._ — I want to know how it works.

Even without question marks, the words still introduce a question, so the accents remain.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Translating every English what as qué

English _what_ can become _qué_, _cuál_ or even _cómo_.

- _What is your address?_ → _¿Cuál es tu dirección?_
- _What is a tortilla española?_ → _¿Qué es una tortilla española?_
- _What is your new apartment like?_ → _¿Cómo es tu piso nuevo?_

Instead of translating one word at a time, think about the answer you want: a definition, an identity or a description.

### Using cuál directly before a noun

For broad, standard Spanish, use _qué_ before a noun.

- Better: _¿Qué canción te gusta?_ — Which song do you like?
- Not the safest general pattern: _¿Cuál canción te gusta?_

If you remove the noun, use _cuál_: _¿Cuál te gusta?_ — Which one do you like?

### Forgetting the accents

Without accents, _que_, _cual_ and _como_ often connect parts of a statement rather than ask for information. Writing the accents makes your meaning clear.

- _¿Cómo lo haces?_ — How do you do it?
- _Lo hago como tú._ — I do it like you.

## A simple three-step choice

When you are unsure, ask yourself these questions:

1. **Is a noun directly after the question word?** Use _qué_: _¿Qué restaurante prefieres?_
2. **Am I asking which one or for a specific identifying fact?** Use _cuál_: _¿Cuál prefieres?_
3. **Am I asking about a method, condition or description?** Use _cómo_: _¿Cómo es el restaurante?_

These steps will not cover every regional expression, but they work well in most everyday conversations.

## Practice qué, cuál and cómo

Complete these questions before checking the answers:

1. ¿\_\_\_ libro quieres comprar?
2. ¿\_\_\_ es tu número de teléfono?
3. ¿\_\_\_ se prepara el gazpacho?
4. ¿\_\_\_ significa esta frase?
5. Hay tres rutas. ¿\_\_\_ es más rápida?
6. ¿\_\_\_ es tu barrio?

Answers:

1. _Qué_ — A noun follows directly.
2. _Cuál_ — The question asks for a specific identifying fact.
3. _Cómo_ — The question asks about a method.
4. _Qué_ — The question asks for a meaning.
5. _Cuál_ — You are identifying one route from a group.
6. _Cómo_ — The question asks what the neighborhood is like.

Knowing the rule is a good start, but quick repetition helps you use it without stopping to translate. Review the [Espanido guide to forming Spanish questions](https://espanido.com/rules/preguntas), then try the [interactive Spanish question exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/preguntas/exercise?utm_content=que-cual-como-guide) for immediate practice.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can qué and cuál both mean what?

Yes. English often translates both words as _what_. Spanish uses _qué_ for definitions and before nouns, while _cuál_ commonly asks for one identified answer or fact.

### Is cuál always used for a limited choice?

No. A visible list can make _cuál_ easy to recognize, but a fixed list is not required. Questions such as _¿Cuál es tu opinión?_ and _¿Cuál es tu nombre?_ also ask for a specific answer.

### Can I say cuál before a noun?

You may hear this pattern in some Spanish-speaking regions. For neutral, widely accepted Spanish, use _qué_ directly before a noun: _¿Qué opción prefieres?_

### What is the difference between qué es and cómo es?

_¿Qué es…?_ asks what something is or requests a definition. _¿Cómo es…?_ asks for a description of its qualities, appearance or personality.

### Do indirect questions need accents?

Yes. Write _qué_, _cuál_ and _cómo_ with accents when they introduce an indirect question: _No sé cuál elegir_ — I don’t know which one to choose.

## The key idea to remember

Do not match _qué_, _cuál_ and _cómo_ to one English word each. Focus on the kind of answer you need: use _qué_ for definitions and before nouns, _cuál_ to identify an answer, and _cómo_ for methods or descriptions.

With a little practice, these choices begin to feel natural. Start with the three-step check, notice the patterns in real conversations, and return to the Espanido exercises whenever you want a quick refresher.

Spanish questions with qué, cuál and cómo

Learning Spanish numbers becomes much easier when you stop treating them as 100 separate words. Most numbers follow a few clear patterns, so you only need to learn the building blocks and then put them together.

Want to practice right away? [Start the numeros exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/numeros/exercise?utm_content=spanish-numbers-1-to-100).

![Spanish numbers from 1 to 100 shown on colorful learning cards](/assets/blog/spanish-numbers-1-to-100-made-simple/og-image.png)

In this guide, you will learn how to count from 1 to 100 in Spanish, how the main number patterns work, and which spellings often cause mistakes. You will also see practical examples for prices, ages, phone numbers, and everyday conversations.

## Spanish numbers from 1 to 10

Start with the first ten numbers. These words are the base for many larger numbers, so learn them well before moving on.

| Number | Spanish | Simple pronunciation guide |
|---:|---|---|
| 1 | uno | OO-noh |
| 2 | dos | dohs |
| 3 | tres | trehs |
| 4 | cuatro | KWAH-troh |
| 5 | cinco | SEEN-koh |
| 6 | seis | says |
| 7 | siete | SYEH-teh |
| 8 | ocho | OH-choh |
| 9 | nueve | NWEH-beh |
| 10 | diez | dyehs |

Pronunciation guides are only approximations. Listen to native Spanish audio when possible and repeat each number aloud.

Try counting real things around you:

- *dos libros* — two books
- *cuatro sillas* — four chairs
- *ocho ventanas* — eight windows
- *diez minutos* — ten minutes

This makes the words more memorable than reading the list several times.

## Spanish numbers from 11 to 15

The numbers from 11 to 15 have their own forms. They do not follow the later pattern exactly, so it is best to learn them as a small group.

| Number | Spanish |
|---:|---|
| 11 | once |
| 12 | doce |
| 13 | trece |
| 14 | catorce |
| 15 | quince |

Here are two useful examples:

- *Tengo doce años.* — I am twelve years old.
- *La clase tiene quince estudiantes.* — The class has fifteen students.

Notice that Spanish uses *tener*, meaning “to have,” when talking about age. You say *Tengo doce años*, not a direct translation of “I am twelve.”

## Spanish numbers from 16 to 19

From 16 onward, the pattern becomes easier to see. The numbers 16 to 19 combine *diez* with another number, but they are written as one word.

| Number | Spanish | Built from |
|---:|---|---|
| 16 | dieciséis | diez + seis |
| 17 | diecisiete | diez + siete |
| 18 | dieciocho | diez + ocho |
| 19 | diecinueve | diez + nueve |

The spelling changes slightly because the parts join together. Also remember the accent mark in *dieciséis*.

For example:

- *Necesito dieciséis euros.* — I need sixteen euros.
- *Hay dieciocho personas aquí.* — There are eighteen people here.

## Spanish numbers from 20 to 29

Twenty is *veinte*. From 21 to 29, Spanish joins *veinte* and the second number into one word.

| Number | Spanish |
|---:|---|
| 20 | veinte |
| 21 | veintiuno |
| 22 | veintidós |
| 23 | veintitrés |
| 24 | veinticuatro |
| 25 | veinticinco |
| 26 | veintiséis |
| 27 | veintisiete |
| 28 | veintiocho |
| 29 | veintinueve |

Three words in this group need written accent marks: *veintidós*, *veintitrés*, and *veintiséis*.

Think of this pattern as “twenty-and-one,” “twenty-and-two,” and so on. The words are joined, but the idea is similar to the pattern used for larger numbers.

- *El libro cuesta veintidós euros.* — The book costs twenty-two euros.
- *Tengo veintinueve años.* — I am twenty-nine years old.

Once you feel comfortable with these forms, test yourself with Espanido’s [Spanish number practice](https://espanido.com/rules/numeros/exercise?utm_content=spanish-numbers-1-to-100). Short practice rounds can help you remember both the spellings and the number values.

## The tens from 30 to 100

Next, learn the main tens. These are the key building blocks for every number from 30 to 99.

| Number | Spanish |
|---:|---|
| 30 | treinta |
| 40 | cuarenta |
| 50 | cincuenta |
| 60 | sesenta |
| 70 | setenta |
| 80 | ochenta |
| 90 | noventa |
| 100 | cien |

Some of these words look similar, so read them carefully. In particular, learners often mix up *sesenta* (60) and *setenta* (70).

A simple memory trick is to connect each word to a personal fact. For example: *Mi padre tiene sesenta años* — “My father is sixty years old.” A real connection makes the word easier to recall.

## How to form numbers from 31 to 99

There is one simple Spanish counting rule for most numbers between 31 and 99:

**tens + y + number from 1 to 9**

The word *y* means “and.” Unlike the numbers from 21 to 29, these numbers are written as three separate words.

| Number | Spanish | Pattern |
|---:|---|---|
| 31 | treinta y uno | 30 + and + 1 |
| 42 | cuarenta y dos | 40 + and + 2 |
| 53 | cincuenta y tres | 50 + and + 3 |
| 64 | sesenta y cuatro | 60 + and + 4 |
| 75 | setenta y cinco | 70 + and + 5 |
| 86 | ochenta y seis | 80 + and + 6 |
| 97 | noventa y siete | 90 + and + 7 |

The exact tens do not need *y*:

- 40 is *cuarenta*, not *cuarenta y*.
- 60 is *sesenta*, not *sesenta y*.
- 90 is *noventa*, not *noventa y*.

You add *y* only when another number follows the tens. For example, 80 is *ochenta*, while 88 is *ochenta y ocho*.

This pattern is the easy way to learn Spanish numbers. Once you know the tens and the numbers from 1 to 9, you can build almost every number up to 99.

## The complete pattern at a glance

You do not need to memorize a list of all 100 numbers. Use this short map instead:

- **1–15:** Learn the individual words.
- **16–19:** Use the joined *dieci-* pattern.
- **20:** Learn *veinte*.
- **21–29:** Use the joined *veinti-* pattern.
- **30–99:** Use the tens, then *y*, then 1–9.
- **100:** Use *cien*.

For example, imagine that you want to say 76. Start with 70, which is *setenta*. Add *y* and then 6, which is *seis*: *setenta y seis*.

Now try 94. Start with *noventa*, add *y*, and finish with *cuatro*: *noventa y cuatro*.

You can review the pattern and examples in Espanido’s [Spanish numbers lesson](https://espanido.com/rules/numeros). Then use the linked exercise to check whether you can recognize and build the numbers without looking at a table.

## What happens to uno before a noun?

The number *uno* changes before some nouns. This is useful when talking about 21, 31, 41, and similar numbers too.

Before a masculine noun, *uno* usually becomes *un*:

- *un libro* — one book
- *veintiún libros* — twenty-one books
- *treinta y un días* — thirty-one days

Before a feminine noun, it becomes *una*:

- *una mesa* — one table
- *veintiuna personas* — twenty-one people
- *cuarenta y una páginas* — forty-one pages

Do not worry if this feels like an extra step. First learn to recognize the numbers. Then practice changing *uno* when you place it before a noun.

## Cien or ciento?

For exactly 100, use *cien*:

- *cien euros* — one hundred euros
- *cien personas* — one hundred people

For numbers above 100, Spanish uses *ciento*, as in *ciento uno* (101). This guide focuses on 1 to 100, so the main form to remember is *cien*.

## Useful examples from everyday life

Numbers are easier to learn when they have a purpose. Here are several situations where you can use them immediately.

### Talking about prices

- *Cuesta treinta euros.* — It costs thirty euros.
- *Son cuarenta y cinco dólares.* — It is forty-five dollars.
- *Pago veintiocho euros.* — I pay twenty-eight euros.

### Saying your age

- *Tengo diecinueve años.* — I am nineteen years old.
- *Mi hermana tiene treinta y dos años.* — My sister is thirty-two years old.

### Talking about quantities

- *Hay cincuenta estudiantes.* — There are fifty students.
- *Necesitamos noventa y nueve platos.* — We need ninety-nine plates.
- *Tengo veintitrés mensajes.* — I have twenty-three messages.

### Reading phone numbers

Spanish speakers often say phone numbers in small groups, but the grouping can change by country. As a beginner, you can safely read each digit separately:

- 582: *cinco, ocho, dos* — five, eight, two

This is also a good way to practice the numbers from zero to nine. Zero is *cero*.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Adding y to numbers in the twenties

Do not write 24 as *veinte y cuatro*. The standard spelling is one word: *veinticuatro*.

From 30 onward, use separate words: *treinta y cuatro*.

### Forgetting accent marks

Remember the accents in these common forms:

- *dieciséis* — 16
- *veintidós* — 22
- *veintitrés* — 23
- *veintiséis* — 26

Accent marks show which part of the word receives stress. Include them when writing Spanish.

### Confusing similar tens

Watch these pairs:

- *cuarenta* — 40 and *cincuenta* — 50
- *sesenta* — 60 and *setenta* — 70
- *ochenta* — 80 and *noventa* — 90

Say each pair aloud and connect it to the first digit. For example, connect *ochenta* with *ocho* because both begin with a similar sound.

### Translating English too directly

English sometimes places “and” in numbers such as “one hundred and one.” Spanish number-building rules are different. Up to 100, use *y* only between the tens and units from 31 to 99, as in *sesenta y tres*.

## A five-minute practice routine

You can learn Spanish numbers without a long study session. Try this routine once a day:

1. Count from 1 to 20 aloud.
2. Say the tens from 20 to 100.
3. Choose five random numbers and build them in Spanish.
4. Read a price, age, page number, or clock display in Spanish.
5. Complete a short [Spanish numbers exercise](https://espanido.com/rules/numeros/exercise?utm_content=spanish-numbers-1-to-100).

For an extra challenge, write ten numbers on small cards. Look at each card and say the Spanish word before turning it over to check your answer.

You can also count backward from 20 to 1. This stops you from relying only on the rhythm of the usual list.

## Quick self-test

Write these numbers in Spanish before checking the answers:

1. 14
2. 26
3. 38
4. 71
5. 95
6. 100

**Answers:**

1. *catorce*
2. *veintiséis*
3. *treinta y ocho*
4. *setenta y uno*
5. *noventa y cinco*
6. *cien*

If you missed one, look at its number group rather than memorizing the answer alone. For example, if 38 was difficult, review the “tens + *y* + unit” pattern.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the fastest way to learn Spanish numbers?

Learn 1 to 15 first, then memorize the tens. After that, use the regular patterns to build the remaining numbers. Speaking numbers aloud and using them for real prices, ages, and quantities will also help.

### Is 21 written as veinte y uno?

No. The standard form is *veintiuno*, written as one word. Before a masculine noun it becomes *veintiún*, as in *veintiún días* — “twenty-one days.”

### Why does Spanish use y in some numbers?

From 31 to 99, *y* connects the tens and the final unit. For example, 47 is *cuarenta y siete*. Exact tens such as 40 and 70 do not need *y*.

### How do you say 100 in Spanish?

Exactly 100 is *cien*. For numbers above 100, the form changes to *ciento*, but *cien* is the word you need when counting from 1 to 100.

### Should I memorize every number from 1 to 100?

No. Learn the special early numbers, the tens, and the joining rules. Once those pieces are clear, you can create most numbers instead of memorizing a long list.

## Keep counting

Spanish counting rules are more regular than they first appear. Focus on the small groups, notice when words join together, and use *y* from 31 onward when a unit follows the tens.

A few minutes of daily practice is enough to make the patterns feel natural. Review the [Espanido numbers guide](https://espanido.com/rules/numeros), complete the exercises, and try using at least three Spanish numbers in your day.

Spanish numbers from 1 to 100 made simple

Perfect tenses indicate that an action has been completed and is linked to a specific point in time. If you want to speak Spanish more naturally, learning perfect tenses is key. They’re not overly complicated—once you see the patterns, you’ll recognize them everywhere, whether in books, Spanish series, news, or everyday chats.

## **What are perfect tenses in Spanish?**

Perfect tense refers to an action that has already been completed at a given moment (past, present, or future) or could have been finished under certain conditions. In Spanish, the verb **haber** acts as an auxiliary, adjusting to reflect the subject and the timeframe. Meanwhile, the past participle remains unchanged but must match the correct verb ending.

## **How to form the perfect tense in Spanish?**

To form perfect tenses in Spanish, combine the auxiliary verb haber _(to have)_ with a past participle.

**Formula:** [Haber *conjugated to the correct tense*] + [verb *in past participle*] + [complement]

### **The auxiliary verb Haber**

"Haber" functions as a helping verb that changes form based on:

- Who's performing the action
- When the action was or will be completed

Unlike English "have", haber is only used as an auxiliary verb in perfect tenses and a few other specific constructions. It's not used to express possession (for which Spanish uses "tener").

### **How to form the Past Participle**

The past participle is created by adding specific endings to verb stems:

- For **-ar** verbs: add -ado (habl**ar** → habl**ado**)
- For **-er** and **-ir** verbs: add -ido (com**er** → com**ido**, viv**ir** → viv**ido**)

However, Spanish has many **irregular past participles** you'll need to memorize:

- hacer → hecho _(made/done)_
- decir → dicho _(said)_
- ver → visto _(seen)_
- poner → puesto _(put)_
- escribir → escrito _(written)_
- romper → roto _(broken)_
- abrir → abierto _(opened)_
- volver → vuelto _(returned)_
- morir → muerto _(died)_

…and many more! A [quick review](https://espanido.com/conjugations) of these is always helpful.

## **Spanish Present Perfect tense (El pretérito perfecto)**

### **What is the Present Perfect?**

### **Advanced tip:**

Usage of Present perfect tense varies significantly across Spanish-speaking regions:

- In Spain: Present perfect is very common for recent past actions, even within completed time frames
- In Latin America: The simple past (preterite) is often preferred for completed actions, even recent ones

For example, a Spaniard might say "Hoy he ido al supermercado" while someone from Mexico would likely say "Hoy fui al supermercado" _(Today I went to the supermarket)_.

## **Spanish Past Perfect tense (El pretérito pluscuamperfecto)**

### **What is the Past Perfect?**

## **Common mistakes to avoid**

### **1. Separating haber from the past participle**

In perfect tenses, haber and the past participle should stay together as a unit. Don't place adverbs or other words between them.

Incorrect: He siempre estudiado español.

**Correct:** Siempre he estudiado español. _I have always studied Spanish._

### **2. Making agreement errors**

Spanish past participles in perfect tenses with haber **do not** change to agree with gender or number:

Incorrect: Ella ha hablada.

**Correct**: Ella ha hablado. She has spoken.

### **3. Mixing up tenses in complex sentences**

Be careful with tense sequences, especially in if-clauses:

Incorrect: Si habría estudiado más, hubiera aprobado el examen.

**Correct:** Si hubiera estudiado más, habría aprobado el examen. _If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam._

Spanish Perfect Tenses: Present, Past, Future, Conditional with examples

Do you still get confused when talking about what happened yesterday or what might happen next week in Spanish? Knowing Spanish verb tenses and moods is your key to speaking naturally and sound like you've been knowing Spanish forever. In this guide, you’ll see conjugation charts, practical examples, and helpful tips for the indicative, subjunctive, and imperative moods.

## **Tenses and Moods in Spanish**

A verb tense indicates when an action takes place—past, present, or future. A mood reflects your attitude or intention about that action.

| **Term** | **Explanation** | **Example with "hablar"** |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Verb tense** | Shows the time of the action (past, present, future). | **Present:** "hablo" (I speak) **Past:** "hablé" (I spoke) **Future:** "hablaré" (I will speak) |
| **Mood** | Shows your perspective on the action (indicative, subjunctive, imperative). | **Indicative:** "hablo" (fact) **Subjunctive:** "hable" (desire) **Imperative:** "¡habla!" (command) |

Together, tenses and moods form the backbone of Spanish verb conjugations, letting you describe when something occurs and how you feel about it.

Check out our [exercises](https://espanido.com/?utm_content=spanishmoods) for interactive practice with Spanish verb tenses and moods.

## **What are the moods in Spanish?**

Spanish has three main moods:

- **Indicative** – Expresses real, factual information.
- **Subjunctive** – Expresses doubt, desires, or hypothetical situations.
- **Imperative** – Gives commands or makes requests.

Below, you’ll find charts for each mood and examples from everyday life.

## **1. Indicative mood: Expressing reality and facts**

The **indicative mood** is used for statements you believe to be true or certain.

## **2. Subjunctive mood: Expressing doubts, desires, emotions**

The subjunctive mood is often challenging because English uses it less often. It covers wishes, uncertainties, emotional reactions and hypothetical situations. The [present subjunctive](https://espanido.com/rules/subjuntivo-presente) is the most commonly used subjunctive tense.

![Table listing the present subjunctive conjugations of the Spanish verb hablar.](/uploads/present-subjunctive-verb-chart.png-9714.png)

## **Other Subjunctive Tenses**

Spanish features several subjunctive tenses to express different time frames:

- **Present Perfect Subjunctive** – for actions that may have been completed:
Espero que hayas hablado con ella. _(I hope you have spoken with her.)_

- [**Spanish Imperfect Subjunctive**](https://espanido.com/rules/subjuntivo-imperfecto) – for past wishes or hypotheticals:
Quería que hablaras más durante la presentación. _(I wanted you to speak more during the presentation.)_

- **Past Perfect Subjunctive** – for hypothetical situations in the past:
Ojalá que hubieras hablado antes. _(I wish you had spoken earlier.)_

- **Future Subjunctive** – rarely used today, mostly seen in old documents.

## **Spanish subjunctive triggers**

Certain words and phrases commonly trigger the subjunctive in Spanish:

- **Doubt**: No estoy seguro de que... _(I’m not sure that…)_ Dudo que... _(I doubt that...)_
- **Desire**: Quiero que... _(I want that…)_

## **What is the difference between Indicative and Subjunctive moods?**

The key difference lies in how you view reality:

- **Indicative mood** presents actions as real, factual, or certain: "Yo hablo español todos los días" _(I speak Spanish every day)_
- **Subjunctive mood** presents actions as uncertain, desired, emotional, or hypothetical: "Quiero que tú hables español conmigo" _(I want you to speak Spanish with me)_

Think of the indicative as the “**reality**” approach and the subjunctive as the “**possibility**” approach.

Subjunctive, Indicative, and Imperative moods in Spanish

Hey, language learners! Ever feel like you're walking through a maze when trying to decide whether to use the subjunctive or indicative in Spanish? These two moods can be tricky, but with a few key pointers, you'll be navigating them like a pro. Let's break it down in a way that's easy to understand.

## **What is the difference between Spanish subjunctive vs indicative?**

So what's the primary difference between these moods? Think of it this way: the **[subjunctive mood](https://espanido.com/rules/subjuntivo-presente)** expresses desires, doubts, wishes, emotions, and possibilities, while the **indicative mood** expresses facts and things you believe to be true and concrete. Subjunctive is all about the subjective and uncertain, while indicative is about the objective and certain.

## **3 moods in Spanish**

Spanish actually has three moods:

- **Indicative:** Expresses facts and certainties.
- **Subjunctive:** Expresses doubts, wishes, and possibilities.
- **Imperative:** Expresses commands.

In this article, we're focusing on the first two, but it's good to know the imperative is there for when you need to tell someone what to do.

## **When to use subjunctive vs indicative**

Here's a crucial point: **the speaker's viewpoint is super important**. Why? Because whether you use the subjunctive or indicative often depends on how certain _you_ are about a statement. Even if something isn't objectively true, if you believe it is, you'd use the indicative. It's all about your perception!

![Spanish verbs that trigger the subjunctive mood. Includes essential verbs like 'Querer que' (To want that), 'Esperar que' (To hope that), 'Pedir que' (To ask that), and 'Dudar que' (To doubt that). ## **Subjunctive triggers**

Most subjunctive sentences share some common signals:

- **Two different subjects:** One in the main clause, one in the subordinate clause.
- **Two verbs:** One in the indicative (main clause), one in the subjunctive (subordinate clause).
- **A relative pronoun:** Words like "que" or "quien" connecting the clauses.

The more you **use** the subjunctive, the more it sticks. [Espanido](https://espanido.com/?utm_content=subjunctivevsindicative) helps you practice in context, so words and phrases feel familiar instead of confusing. Whether it's wishes, doubts, or recommendations, you'll get comfortable using the subjunctive in real-life situations.

## **When to use the Indicative**

On the flip side, we have **SPOCK** to help you with the indicative:

- **S**peech: _decir_ (to say)
- **P**erceptions: _ver_ (to see)
- **O**ccurrences
- **C**ertainty: _es claro que_ (it is clear that)
- **K**nowledge

SPOCK is your go-to for expressing facts, beliefs, and observations.

**Words or phrases from the SPOCK acronym that trigger the indicative mood:** _decir_ (to say), _ver_ (to see), and _es claro que_ (it is clear that).

## **SPOCK examples (Indicative)**

**S**peech: Él _dice que_ va a llegar tarde. (He says that he is going to be late.

**P**erceptions: Yo _veo que_ estás cansado. (I see that you are tired.)

**O**ccurrences: _Ocurre que_ siempre llega a tiempo. (It happens that he always arrives on time.)

**C**ertainty: _Es claro que_ vamos a ganar. (It is clear that we are going to win.)

**K**nowledge: Yo _sé que_ ella es inteligente. (I know that she is intelligent.)

### **Spanish tenses and moods: Not the same thing!**

Don't mix up Spanish mood and tense! Mood reflects your attitude toward a statement (certainty, doubt), while tense indicates _when_ an action takes place (past, present, future). They're distinct grammatical categories.

👉 **Having a hard time with the Spanish moods? [Espanido](https://espanido.com/) makes it easy—give it a try!** [Download the app](https://espanido.com/download?utm_content=subjunctivevsindicative).

## **Common mistakes to avoid**

**Confusing similar verbs**: Be careful with verbs that can trigger either the subjunctive or indicative depending on the context. For example, _creer_ (to believe) triggers the indicative in affirmative sentences (Creo que es verdad – I believe it is true) but the subjunctive in negative sentences (No creo que sea verdad – I don't believe it is true).

**Misinterpreting sentence structure**: Pay close attention to the structure of complex sentences. Subjunctive clauses often follow specific conjunctions or relative pronouns like _que_ or _quien_.

## Final Thoughts

So, there you have it! The subjunctive and indicative moods don't have to be scary. Remember WEIRDO and SPOCK, consider the speaker's viewpoint, and you'll nail these essential aspects of Spanish grammar. Understanding the subjunctive and indicative moods in Spanish takes time and [practice](https://espanido.com/rules/subjuntivo-presente/exercise?utm_content=subjunctivevsindicative). Stay curious, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. ¡Buena suerte!

Spanish moods: Subjunctive vs Indicative

Have you ever spent hours memorizing Spanish vocabulary or grammar rules only to find yourself drawing a blank when you need those most? We've all been there. You study intensely one evening, feel confident about your progress, but a week later—poof—those carefully memorized words seem to have vanished into thin air.

This common frustration has a solution: **spaced repetition.** This technique isn't just another study method—it's a scientifically-backed approach that can transform how you learn and retain Spanish language.

## **What is a spaced repetition technique?**

Spaced repetition, is a learning technique that works with your brain's natural memory processes. Unlike cramming, which overwhelms your short-term memory, spaced repetition involves reviewing information at gradually increasing intervals.

The concept is straightforward: review material when you're on the verge of forgetting it. This sweet spot of timing challenges your brain just enough to strengthen the memory without starting from scratch. Each successful recall makes the memory more durable.

This approach makes learning sustainable and effective. You're not just memorizing words, you're building neural pathways that make recall more automatic over time.

## **The science behind spaced repetition method**

The foundations of spaced repetition trace back to the 1880s when Hermann Ebbinghaus conducted pioneering memory research. Ebbinghaus discovered what we now know as the "forgetting curve"—the rate at which we forget information over time when there's no attempt to retain it.

![A graph representing Hermann Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, demonstrating how memory fades without review.](/uploads/ebbinghaus-forgetting-curve-4653.png)

_Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve_

## **Retention with spaced repetition**

What's fascinating about Ebbinghaus's findings is that information isn't actually completely lost from memory—it just becomes harder to access. Each review session helps recover that information and makes the memory more resistant to forgetting.

| **Time after learning** | **Retention without review** | **Retention with repetition** |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| 20 minutes | 58% | 100% |
| 1 hour | 44% | 99% |
| 9 hours | 36% | 94% |
| 1 day | 33% | 92% |
| 3 day | 28% | 88% |

Effect of spaced repetition on memory retention.

Later, linguist Paul Pimsleur built on this research by applying spaced repetition specifically to language learning. His work showed that this method is particularly effective for acquiring vocabulary in foreign languages, making it especially valuable for Spanish learners.

![A graph showing how spaced repetition improves memory retention in language learning over time compared to no review.](/uploads/spaced-repetition-language-learning-9461.png)

Effect of spaced repetition on memory retention

## **Benefits of spaced repetition method**

Spaced repetition offers numerous advantages that make it particularly suited for language learning:

- **Long-term retention:** Words and grammar rules reviewed through spaced repetition stick in your memory far longer than those crammed the night before a test.
- **Learning chunks:** Breaking vocabulary and grammar into smaller sets makes learning less overwhelming and more sustainable.
- **Active recall:** The method forces your brain to work to retrieve information, which strengthens memory pathways.
- **Progress:** Many spaced repetition systems track performance, giving you concrete feedback on your improvement.
- **Reduced study anxiety:** Knowing you have a system to capture and retain vocabulary relieves the pressure to memorize everything at once.

For Spanish learners specifically, these benefits translate to more confident conversations, better comprehension, and a growing vocabulary that doesn't leak away between practice sessions.

## **Spaced repetition schedule**

Creating an effective spaced repetition schedule requires some planning, but the results are worth it. Here's how to get started:

First, commit to consistency. Spaced repetition works because of the spacing—irregular practice undermines the entire method. Even short daily sessions are more effective than occasional marathon study sessions.

When planning your intervals, consider these factors:

- Your prior knowledge of Spanish
- The difficulty of the material
- Your personal learning capacity
- How much time you can realistically commit each day

## **Best spaced repetition time intervals:**

- First review: Same day as learning
- Second review: 1 day after learning
- Third review: 3 days after learning
- Fourth review: 7 days after learning
- Fifth review: 14 days after learning

For your initial study session with new material, take your time. Understand the meanings, practice pronunciations, and make connections to words you already know. This deep first engagement makes subsequent reviews much more efficient.

![A table outlining the optimal review schedule for spaced repetition for learning Spanish words and grammar, listing different intervals for maximum retention.](/uploads/spaced-repetition-schedule-time-intervals-7208.png)

### For more advanced learners

You might follow this SuperMemo style schedule:

- First review: 1 day after learning
- Second review: 7 days after learning
- Third review: 16 days after learning
- Fourth review: 35 days after learning

_Spaced repetition schedule_

Remember that the goal isn't to cram as many words as possible into each session. Quality matters more than quantity, especially when building a foundation in a new language.

## **Study techniques and free apps for spaced repetition**

The right tools can make implementing spaced repetition much easier. Here are some effective options:

Physical flashcards remain a powerful learning tool, especially when organized using the Leitner system, which sorts cards into boxes based on how well you know them. Cards you struggle with are reviewed more frequently, while known cards are reviewed less often.

Digital solutions have taken spaced repetition to new levels of effectiveness. **Anki** stands out as one of the most popular spaced repetition apps. Its open-source nature means you'll find pre-made Spanish vocabulary decks covering everything from beginner phrases to medical terminology.

**SuperMemo** offers another powerful algorithm that aims to optimize the spacing intervals based on cognitive science research.

For Spanish grammar practice **Espanido** offers exercises with built-in spaced repetition. The app intelligently adjusts review schedules based on your performance.

**Clozemaster** is another option that provides context-based learning using fill-in-the-blank exercises with spaced repetition built in.

Many language platforms also incorporate spaced repetition principles. **Duolingo** uses a "strength bar" system that prompts you to review weakening skills, while **SpanishDict** offers vocabulary review tools that follow spaced repetition principles.

## **Active recall and spaced repetition**

Spaced repetition works best when combined with active recall—the practice of retrieving information from memory rather than simply reviewing it passively.

Here are effective ways to incorporate active recall into your Spanish study:

- Before checking answers, always attempt to recall the word or phrase first. That moment of effort is where the learning happens.
- Speak out loud when practicing vocabulary. Saying the words engages more of your brain in the learning process.
- Explain concepts to others (or pretend to). Teaching is one of the most powerful forms of active recall.
- Use platforms like Espanido that require you to actively produce answers rather than just recognize them, creating stronger memory connections.

## **Advanced tips for study with spaced repetition**

As you become more comfortable with spaced repetition, consider these advanced techniques:

- Personalize your intervals based on your learning patterns. If you notice certain types of words are harder to remember, schedule them for more frequent review.
- Incorporate context by using example sentences that relate to your interests or daily life. A word related to your hobby will stick better than an isolated vocabulary item.
- Track your metrics to optimize your system. Many apps provide data on your recall rate and learning efficiency. Use this information to refine your approach.
- Create connection cards that link related Spanish words together (synonyms, antonyms, word families). These connections create a web of knowledge that strengthens overall retention.

## **Conclusion**

Spaced repetition isn't just another study technique—it's a scientifically-validated approach to learning that works with how our brains naturally form and strengthen memories.

For Spanish learners, this method offers a pathway to vocabulary that sticks, grammar that becomes intuitive, and ultimately, language skills that remain accessible when you need them most.

Begin by choosing a tool that fits your learning style, whether that's a physical flashcard system or a digital app like Anki, SuperMemo, or Espanido. Remember that language learning is a marathon, not a sprint. The steady, consistent approach of spaced repetition might feel slower at first compared to cramming, but the long-term results—fluency, confidence, and genuine communication ability—are incomparably better.

What is the best way to learn Spanish? Strategies for fast and easy learning

Anyone who's spent time learning Spanish knows the moment when a simple sentence becomes a mental puzzle. Unlike English, where verbs largely stay the same regardless of who's performing the action, Spanish transforms its verbs dramatically based on the subject, tense, and voice.

In English, verbs barely change:

- I talk
- You talk
- They talk

But in Spanish?

- Yo **hablo**
- Tú **hablas**
- Ellos **hablan**

Each subject changes the verb. This might feel tricky at first - but it’s exactly what gives Spanish its flow and precision.

This guide breaks down how to conjugate the three main types of regular Spanish verbs (-ar, -er, and -ir) in common tenses, complete with clear charts, practical tips, and real-world examples.

## How to conjugate Spanish verbs step-by-step

All Spanish verbs end in **-ar**, **-er**, or **-ir** in their base form (called the **infinitive**), like:

- **[Hablar](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-hablar/exercise)** (to speak)
- **[Comer](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-comer/exercise)** (to eat)
- **[Vivir](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-vivir/exercise)** (to live)

### A Spanish verb has two parts:

- The **stem** - what remains after removing the -ar, -er, or -ir ending
- The **ending** - the part that changes based on who's performing the action and when

For example, with "[hablar](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-hablar/exercise)" (to speak):

- The stem is "**habl-**"
- The ending "**-ar**" gets replaced with a new ending during conjugation

### **Spanish subject pronouns for verb conjugation:**

- Yo - I
- Tú - You (informal)
- Usted - You (formal)
- Él/Ella - He/She
- Nosotros/as - We
- Vosotros/as - You all (Spain)
- Ustedes - You all (Latin America)
- Ellos/Ellas - They

Because the verb ending makes it clear who's performing the action, Spanish often drops the subject:

**"Hablo español"** = "I speak Spanish" (no need to say "Yo").

## **Spanish regular verbs conjugation:** Patterns

Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their infinitive endings, making them the perfect starting point for mastering Spanish conjugation.

The basic rule for conjugating regular verbs in most tenses is straightforward:

- Remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir)
- Add the appropriate ending for the subject and tense

Let's explore how this works across the three most essential tenses for beginners.

## **Present tense conjugation for AR, ER, and IR verbs**

The present tense in Spanish is versatile, covering multiple English constructions:

- I speak
- I am speaking
- I do speak

To form the present tense, drop the infinitive ending and add the specific endings for each subject.

### Present tense endings for conjugating AR, ER, and IR verbs

- **AR:**

**yo** -o, **tú** -as, **él/ella** -a, **nosotros** -amos, **vosotros** -áis, **ellos** -an

- **ER:**

**yo** -o, **tú** -es, **él/ella** -e, **nosotros** -emos, **vosotros** -éis, **ellos** -en

- **IR:**

**yo** -o, **tú** -es, **él/ella** -e, **nosotros** -imos, **vosotros** -ís, **ellos** -en

## How to conjugate Spanish verbs in Past tense (Preterite)

The preterite tense describes completed actions at a specific point in the past.

The conjugation rule remains consistent:

- Remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir)
- Add the appropriate ending for the subject and tense

However, the regular preterite has two sets of endings: one for -ar verbs and another shared by both -er and -ir verbs.

### **Conjugation endings for regular verbs in Preterite**

- **AR:**

**yo** -é, **tú** -aste, **él/ella** -ó, **nosotros** -amos, **vosotros** -asteis, **ellos** -aron

- **ER / -IR:**

**yo** -í, **tú** -iste, **él/ella** -ió, **nosotros** -imos, **vosotros** -isteis, **ellos** -ieron

**ER/-IR verbs ([comer](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-comer/exercise)/[vivir](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-vivir/exercise)):**

- Yo com**í** / viv**í**
- Tú com**iste** / viv**iste**
- Él/Ella/Usted com**ió** / viv**ió**
- Nosotros/as com**imos** / viv**imos**
- Vosotros/as com**isteis** / viv**isteis**
- Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes com**ieron** / viv**ieron**

[Practice the preterite tense (Pretérito Indefinido) with interactive exercises](https://espanido.com/rules/preterito-indefinido/exercise).

**Expert Tip:** Keep an eye on the accent marks! The tildes (written accents) on the final vowel of the _yo_ (-é, -í) and _él/ella/usted_ (-ó, -ió) forms in the preterite are crucial. They can change both the tense and subject of a sentence. Compare:

- **mando** (I command)
- **mandó** (he/she/you commanded)

**Practical Advice:**

The **nosotros** form (we) of **-ar verbs** is the same in both present and past: **-amos**.

So a sentence like **“Cocinamos paella”** can mean:

→ “We cook paella” (present)

→ **or** “We cooked paella” (past)

How do you know the difference? Look at the **context** - words like **“ayer” (yesterday)** or **“siempre” (always)** will help you to clarify which tense is being used.

## **Future tense conjugation for AR, ER, and IR verbs**

The future tense works differently from the present and preterite. Instead of removing the infinitive ending, you

- keep the entire infinitive
- add the future tense endings directly to it

Works the same for **-ar**, **-er**, and **-ir** verbs.

### **Future tense endings for regular Spanish verbs**

**yo** -é, **tú** -ás, **él/ella** -á, **nosotros** -emos, **vosotros** -éis, **ellos** -án

**Examples ([hablar](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-hablar/exercise) / [comer](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-comer/exercise) / [vivir](https://espanido.com/rules/conjugation-vivir/exercise)):**

- Yo hablar**é** / comer**é** / vivir**é**
- Tú hablar**ás** / comer**ás** / vivir**ás**
- Él/Ella/Usted hablar**á** / comer**á** / vivir**á**
- Nosotros/as hablar**emos** / comer**emos** / vivir**emos**
- Vosotros/as hablar**éis** / comer**éis** / vivir**éis**
- Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes hablar**án** / comer**án** / vivir**án**

## **Patterns in ER and IR verbs you should know**

- **ER and -IR verbs** share endings in the **preterite** and **future**
- In the **present**, they differ only for _nosotros_ and _vosotros_:
  - ER: emos / éis
  - IR: imos / ís

Er and IR verbs follow almost the same pattern, so if you know one, the other is easy to pick up.

## **Irregular verbs conjugation in Spanish**

While regular verbs follow clear patterns, many common Spanish verbs are irregular - they don’t follow the usual rules. These irregular verbs often fall into a few main groups.

- **Spelling changes** (to preserve pronunciation)
- **Stem changes** (e.g., _e → ie_, _o → ue_)
- **Totally irregular forms** (like **ser**, **ir**, **tener**)

Tip: Focus on regular verbs first-they’re your best entry point. Once you're comfortable, you can explore all the verb rules and practice conjugating them [here](https://espanido.com/conjugations).

## Reflexive verbs and Present Progressive in Spanish

Once you’ve got the main tenses down, there are other useful verb forms to learn:

- **Present Progressive**
Used to talk about what’s happening right now. Formed with a conjugated form of "estar" plus the gerund (-ando for -ar verbs, -iendo for -er/-ir verbs)
  👉 _Estoy hablando_ = I am speaking
- **Reflexive verbs**
These show that someone is doing something to themselves. Use reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os, se) before the conjugated verb
👉 _Me lavo las manos_ = I wash my hands

## Tips and best practices for learning Spanish conjugation

Conjugation might feel tricky at first, but with the right habits, it gets easier. Try these:

- **Use verb charts** as a guide while you're still getting used to the endings.
- **Listen to Spanish music** - repeated lyrics help you remember forms without even trying.
- **Watch Spanish movies or shows with subtitles** to hear how verbs are used in context.
- **Build full sentences on Espanido** - this helps you _use_ verbs, not just memorize them.
- **Practice speaking on Tandem or HelloTalk, or get feedback from a tutor on Italki** - real conversation makes it stick.

## **Your journey to Spanish fluency**

Learning regular -ar, -er, and -ir conjugations is a major step to Spanish fluency. These are the verbs that carry conversations across tenses.

[Practice Spanish conjugation](https://espanido.com/conjugations) every day. Use the tools, lean on the patterns, and don’t fear mistakes. Everyone starts at step one.

¡Buena suerte en tu viaje con el español! (Good luck on your journey with Spanish!)
