Spanish number rules in short

  • 0–29 are single words: dieciséis, veintidós, veintiocho.
  • 31–99 join tens and units with y: treinta y uno, sesenta y cinco. There is no y after hundreds: ciento cinco, not ciento y cinco.
  • 100 is cien, but ciento when more follows: ciento uno.
  • Hundreds agree in gender: doscientos libros, doscientas casas.
  • 1,000 is mil (never un mil); 1,000,000 is un millón, plural millones.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write numbers in Spanish words?

Numbers 0–29 are single words (veintidós, veintiocho). From 31 to 99 you join tens and units with "y" (treinta y uno, noventa y nueve). Hundreds come before them without "y" (ciento cinco, trescientos cuarenta), and "mil" and "millones" are added for larger numbers.

When do you use cien and when ciento?

Use "cien" for exactly 100 and before "mil" or "millones" (cien libros, cien mil). Use "ciento" when another number follows: ciento uno, ciento veinte, ciento noventa y nueve.

Is it uno, un or una?

Use "uno" when counting or when the number stands alone. Before a masculine noun it shortens to "un" (un libro, veintiún libros), and before a feminine noun it becomes "una" (una casa, veintiuna casas).

How do you say 1,000 and 1,000,000 in Spanish?

1,000 is "mil", never "un mil". 1,000,000 is "un millón", and from two million it is plural: "dos millones". Before a noun, add "de": un millón de personas.

How is a billion said in Spanish?

The English billion (1,000,000,000) is "mil millones" in Spanish. The Spanish word "billón" means a million millions (1,000,000,000,000), which is a trillion in English.

How do you read decimals in Spanish?

Spanish uses a comma as the decimal mark and reads it as "coma": 3,5 is "tres coma cinco" and 0,25 is "cero coma veinticinco". In Mexico and the US you may also see a decimal point, read as "punto".
